There's a huge variation in how bad McDonald's food is wrt obesity, if you look at calories versus satiety. Probably the worst are sugary soft drinks and milkshakes. Potato fries are quite bad. Hamburgers are okayish. Salads are o

I get your point, but it's not hard to tax the correct foods. Just start with the worst, such as sugary drinks.

* Cigs have inelastic demand. * In Germany they hit a point where a price rise (in the name of health) resulted in reduced smoking and less tax collected and they immediately wanted to reduce tax. Can't both be true...

Perhaps, but that's not an indictment of Feynman, but an indictment of how you get a PhD nowadays. Today you get a PhD for something rigorous and technical and ultimately irrelevant compared to Feynman diagrams and path integrals.

I see, I misunderstood what you meant by "Would you feel comfortable that you still have your job". I now see that you probably meant it as "Would you feel confident that you still have your job". I originally thought

You're backpedaling. Now you're acting as if you were giving self-preservation advice in the face of a mob, whereas in your original comment you were supporting said mob. What is your stance?

Isn't double descent explained by the following? The network contains many more parameters than data points. Therefore there is an entire region of lowest training error. A random point sonewhere in the middle of that region probably g

Our galaxy and that galaxy were already far away from each other 12 billion years ago, even if they started at the same place 13.8 billion years ago.

You're equivocating on the word "support". Actively supporting whoever is currently in power is not the same as not caring enough to bother or being on the fence as to which side to support.

That statement is a provable fact. FLT is "for all positive integers a,b,c and n > 2, a^n + b^n != c^n". Equalities and disequalities on natural numbers have no interesting proofs in the HoTT sense. That is, when x,y are natura

The HoTT n-type stuff is orthogonal to this. Fermat's last theorem is a singleton in HoTT, so any two proofs of it are equal in the HoTT sense, but new proofs would still be considered valuable.

It's a chicken and egg problem. Is the absence of a path to accrue wealth the reason why Somalia doesn't have a well-functioning political system, or is the bad political situation (part of) the reason why it's so hard for So

Different regions have had vastly varying levels of liberalism with vastly different levels of wealth. Look at Saudi Arabia. And remember that rich countries 100 years ago were much poorer than poor countries now. There is some correlation

Leavening for fewer hours gives a different kind of structure the the bread. Shorter leavening: smaller bubbles, more soft texture. Longer leavening: bigger bubbles, more chewy texture. Longer leavening also gives it a more yeasty flavour.
