The problem isn't things that we know how to visualize but do not fit the 2D model, the problem is the things that we do not know how to visualize well (which is most of the data in our programs). Visualizing the output of a program

I think most of the amazement came from the time they were in. In that time this was truly revolutionary. Having a whole OS based on it is still arguably revolutionary, but from a programming/IDE perspective I don't think they are

Is there a real trade off between intuitive and easy to compute, versus sound and satisfies the ordering constraints, or can you just compute the most precise sound solution?

ARC is reference counting so it doesn't collect cycles, and it isn't real time either.

Does it really though? The netflix stats show that at most it's a 2x saving: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-72J2TkcP4j0/TxcdvDk58VI/AAAAAAAABA... And EC2 is more than 2x as expensive as dedicated... Don't get

Is elasticity really an advantage of EC2? Dedicated is so much cheaper that you can just overprovision massively and still come out cheaper than EC2.

I didn't say optimizing Erlang is irrelevant, just that for me a book about optimizing Erlang is less relevant than a book about writing distributed systems in Erlang.

When they built 7km of the A4 highway in the Netherlands it ended up costing about 900 million euros, so that's what I based the numbers on. Not sure what's causing the massive difference. Maybe the 4 million dollars is per lane?

I guess, but in my experience optimization buys you maybe 2x if the code was written reasonably well. By using Erlang you leave 3x-30x on the table vs reasonably well written C, and it's often easier to write that C code than to optimi

I would not write performance sensitive code in Erlang, so no. I'd be more interested in a book about distributed programming than a book about optimization.

Do you realize that while it wasn't successful, they did actually make a game? http://store.steampowered.com/app/281940/ For comparison, €60000 buys about 40cm = 0.0004km of highway.

I think I don't understand your question. My remark was about his type Tree[T] of syntax trees annotated with values of type T. For syntax trees annotated with types he uses Tree[Type], which makes sense. Then for untyped syntax trees

People have done something like this for pointer analysis (statically determining to which memory locations a pointer can point, which is a prerequisite for many optimizations), e.g. http://yanniss.github.io/doop-datalog2.0.

I don't understand the part about the variance of the tree type. Couldn't he just use the unit/top type as a type parameter for untyped trees, rather than the nothing/bottom type? Not only does that seem more intuitively

The guy has run multiple successful businesses, so maybe he paid for it himself. If only the US had a sane legal system (i.e. loser pays), then the poor could get justice too, rather than inevitably losing a battle of attrition.

The function type A -> B corresponds to A => B in logic. This is a subtle but important difference between logic and type theory. In logic a statement is true or false, but that's it. In type theory a statement (= type) has evide

Yes, that's pretty much it. Doing this systematically for all types including dependent types that quantify over Bool, as well as for user defined higher inductive types is another matter.
