Yes, I think they should be forced to. Note that this still (of course) requires following said person on said instance. So people won't be spammed by views they disagree with. Mastodon is no different than, say, Facebook there. You st

My issue with this is that this kind of instance hopping can easily kill a network. Many who were on my instance that shut down didn't migrate away in time and now they lost all their posts, follows, and followers. Many of those won&#x

I think it's too barebones and they are still working out the moderation and safety problem. Besides, it looks like it scales like shit. It's not ready for wide adoption, I have to agree about this one.

This is going to be very interesting to watch, and I honestly... For all I think about Meta as a company, I have to congratulate them on the timing. They probably pushed hard to meet this deadline the past few weeks in order to coincide wit

Weird how it was running on the same network with the same name, but not filling the same purpose. So this is really more just a curiosity. It would have been much stranger if Threads was actually the same thing and now relaunched.

And then I get defederated for having done so. Did you even read my post? It's an illusion freedom that does not exist in practice because this is Mastodon we're talking about.

Yes, but the point being made is that you then choose a more welcoming instance and then it's defederated instead because it allowed your post, so then your Mastodon experience sucks anyway and you only gave yourself an illusion of fre

I think it was a long time ago now, back when Google stopped improving their core service (search) to help profits through a better service than the rest and no longer "breaking markets" like introducing Gmail with seemingly infin

I agree, this looks like a misuse of Github unless these magnet link archives were part of a software project. I'm fed up with people abusing this service for this stuff. Support piracy somewhere else.

I think this nails a problem with federation more than the novelty of following communities from your instance. I was subject to these politics on Mastodon too. Politics hurt ActivityPub. There, I said it. It’s the elephant in the room.

Yeah, good point about instances being communities! It’s like how the Star Trek one did it and my mind boggled when I realized you could (and someone has done so) make a national Lemmy _instance_ rather than just a /r/mycountry. A

Yes and it’s weird how weaning yourself off these things can go more easily than expected if you’re ”forced” to (because how you need to use the service changes too much for your tastes). I think it speaks a lot about the _illusion of value

Ugh, what an eventful time of social media this has been. First Twitter API, then Reddit API, so today Apollo and many more Reddit clients shut down, and now Nitter. :-( I'm happy Lemmy is kind of taking off. I think it's helped m

There were so far reaching effects too. They even shut down national TV and blocked websites in the risk of propaganda against them. I don't think it was for show either.

I also heard this. I unfortunately forget which study it was but yes, their paper spoke of likely diminishing returns at least at around 400-500B parameters for current LLM's. The recent news of GPT-4 running on 8x 220B LLM's (whi

I wonder what is to come next because it’s a site so reliant on their community and they have a very loud voice per the design itself. A mod team needs to have passion and time, and befriend their community. They can’t just throw anyone in.
