For some easy to grok examples: imagine MNIST, where all the pixels besides the writing are 0; or a recommendation system, where column i has the users rating for movie i, or number of times they listened to song i; or any one-got encoding

You can do that with the lightning network. The problem is double spend. With cash, it’s hard to copy. With anything electronic, it’s trivial to copy. That’s why it has to be a ledger. Notice visa requires internet connection as wel

That’s true, but also networks can be fast. https://colin-scott.github.io/personal_website/research/inte... It can be faster to read over the network than to read from a hard drive.

Is there a financial benefit to doing this? What does the spammer gain? Each transaction takes a small PoW value. I wonder what the total cost is to the spammer (in terms of how much they could have made with this hashrate mining a differe

I think the analysis still hold even with a transaction backlog, as long as the fees in these transactions are exponential distributed (a few very high value txs, then it trails off quickly) However I have know idea if this is close to what

Yes, NTP clock sync assumes symmetric delays, so you have the exact same problem. However they use the closest NTP time server, so assuming the NTP server owners correctly are able to sync their own servers, the offset is probably close. Un

Binary search won’t be any faster (in big O) because it’s backed by an array: you’ll still need to copy every element after the removed one from slot n to n-1.
