Aurora most definitely does not do that for Postgres. Postgres’s storage layer is separate enough that this is quite possible. Edit: maybe the confusion here is about what “storage layer” means here. The physical row encoding is still the s

Ah, good point. I’ll add it to my list to update the canonical version on Medium ( https://medium.com/p/20d3749ed680 ). We’re still running PG11 so I haven’t been as good about getting some of the newer stuff added to th

Aurora isn’t a reimplementation anyway, it’s a fork with the storage layer replaced.

That’s true to a degree except that most of the companies involved have made their position by selling it as a platform that anyone can use and that the content on the platform is explicitly not the speech of the platform provider.

Exactly. GP assumes there are only two alternative goods, but like almost every well-intentioned idea it doesn’t actually take into account human behavior and how artificially changing demand for one thing can have really bad consequences.

Notably they hint at one of the problems but don’t discuss fixing it at all: it’s bizarre that AirTags can’t be shared with a family account. It’s irritating that if I grab my wife’s copy of the car key I get alerts about being tracked, and

What about payments? And web hosting? And so many other things? It’s never been easier to start a site, yes, but it’s also never been more obvious that the providers that make it that easy aren’t interested in neutrality.

If you have any non-ASCII characters wouldn’t the C collation be very surprising? I’m having a hard time seeing how the C collation is a sensible default for UTF encoded text . If you want to limit to ASCII the why are you using UTF?
