While I think the printer problem is real I think it is less of a long term opportunity because paper is becoming less valuable. When everyone has a phone or tablet with them all the time they'd much rather have photos there than prin

Costco offers a similar negotiation service. The prices are good, but it is limited to fairly popular models and specific dealers. It seems like a good tradeoff if you find the usual negotiation painful.

People make tools to game usage-based rewards in free to play games. They call it "idling". You could hack this by making an idling tool for spotify that would re-stream your tracks when you weren't using spotify.

I work on games. I use linear algebra daily and calculus frequently, but far less often. Both are extremely relevant to game development although you can get by without calculus and only light linear algebra if you limit your scope or spe

Removing most of the business complexity around licensing an engine is a big deal for small developers. This is good news.

I would definitely recommend his short stories. Most of them are excellent and it's a small investment of time so you can try several to get the feel of his work. If you're reading novels, "Martian Time-Slip" is a good

I agree about soda. To me it was one of the easiest things to eliminate from my diet because after a few months without one I didn't like them anymore. I have also mostly given up fries, but I still like them even after not having any

Gatekeeper was explicitly designed to make OSX more locked down with respect to third party applications. You could also argue that the numerous rejections of third party applications that conflict with various Apple goals are changes in th

I totally agree with this. I usually turn my monitor brightness down to the lowest setting (my work monitor has been set this way for years). I've done the A/B testing on myself and find that I will develop something like a mild

One of the biggest problems with OpenGL currently is the lack of a good binary intermediate representation of shaders. Direct3D has a byte code representation that is vendor neutral. OpenGL has APIs that let you cache off binary shader re

Using Windows 8 as a windows development platform is inferior to windows 7 if you target legacy users (windows XP) because Windows 8 does not support installing SDKs like DirectX9. You can still compile for those targets but you can't

I have a lot of experience hiring programmers, and to me the salary range for programmers appears to be much larger than this article states. Specifically this: "Here are some things you can point out to your employer to help make your

Seattle is actually set up fairly well for this. While it isn't painless to commute between Seattle and the east side, it is certainly simpler to do so than commute to/from San Francisco and its suburbs. We are located in Bellev

I would try to look at this in a different way: Is there some kind of flexibility that your employer could offer you in return that would allow it to ask for this kind of flexibility from you? If there is, why is this a problem? Looking at

There are big problems with the optics and resolution of the current rift display that would keep you from wanting to use it as a monitor. Even the HD version won't fix that, but perhaps the future 4K version will be better in that re

I have been comparing the Model S and the S7 as well. For me the S7 wins the emotional "want-to-buy-it" comparison, but the model S wins the rational "reasons-to-buy-it" comparison. But at this price point the decision
