I worked on a compliance effort for a large-ish American tech company. Imagine a lot of boxes and arrows diagrams and plausible deniability. I was told we had to "balance risk", which in practice meant all data was available to ev

Even for the behemoth companies that are able to harness AI, it seems like the domains are a) heavily constrained b) fault tolerant. For example, voice assistants - they have very limited capabilities and consumers will accept pretty poor p

Anything can go to the supreme court if you try hard enough: https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/mandamus But also yes, the Supreme Court has discretionary appeals jurisdiction over any federal case.

Versioning schematics and manuals is actually a great place for version control in manufacturing. One of my first projects out of school was a web app where our engineers could document the assembly steps for a given sub-assenbly, then stri

But compare that to trying to say whether that system is "Democrat" or "Republican". Either party could advocate for that policy, or the inverse policy, and they could change their stance at any time.

The situation is similar in Canada - a significant number of people would support the NDP, but they're viewed as a spoiler. In my parent's riding, for instance, 55% of people voted for the two left-wing candidates, so the seat wen

Anecdotally, a lot of people I know who have trouble losing weight drink diet soda. I don't know what mechanism would cause that, but metabolism and satiety are complicated enough that I could believe there's a correlation. I'

You seem to badly misunderstand what "data engineer" means. IME the role is basically infrastructure up to custom ETL jobs. It is a specialized strain of software engineering.

The protests have been very small, despite the media doing their best to promote them. If you look at someone like Doug Ford, the extremely conservative, pro-business premier of Ontario, he has consistently advocated for masking and lockdow

My value is "I want to have enough money to provide for my family". One way of achieving that is by getting a big lump sum payout, at the risk of future employability. The other is switching jobs frequently to stay on top of thing

People can be unhappy about more than one thing. My point is that the "value experience over comp and comfort" perspective was drilled into me when I was starting out, and it definitely contributed to what I now think was a mistak

To be clear, I'm not being anti-semitic. Jon Stewart, to me, is emblematic of everything wrong with liberal politics in the United States. He spent 8 years dunking on George W and Republicans for being "stupid" while they con
