The usual money quote for the Peter Principle is, "in a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence" -- but I like your summation so much better.

I'm inclined to disagree. The converse -- what skills does a programmer who has never left academia lack? -- strikes me as perfectly valid. And surely there must be some benefit to taking four (or more) years out of your productive life t

Well, I think the executives who made the decision to pursue this strategy might very well disagree with me. I'm also not convinced that it's common sense to pursue quality over popularity. In general, following your metrics is the soun

I was having a conversation with an editor I work with about CNN the other day, when the following occurred to me: I feel like the root of CNN's problem is that they have more or less abandoned the pursuit of "quality" reporting in favor of

I'm not sure you've really disproved anybody's point. Consider that a rich kid's parents will likely spend hundreds of thousands of dollars (if not more) on their child's education, on everything from the best preschools to a top prep schoo

I think this is great, personally. The only things more I'd wish for from this site: * It'd be great if it was more clear that Microsoft itself was behind the site (there's just one little logo at the bottom left). * The home page seems tar

A link to a PDF of a research document with an obtuse abstract, versus a quick, readable summary published on one of the industry's leading tech publications? I'll take the latter, thank you.

FWIW, Highrise also sets seemingly "arbitrary" limits to the number of contacts you can have in an account: http://highrisehq.com/signup I guess both Google and 37signals do it because it's just a quick and dirty way to manage resources.
