Reading this article, the thought occurred to me that perhaps it's the "building stuff" part of computing that women aren't as interested in, as opposed to the "math" part, which is the typical culprit. So, did a bit of googling and found t

Can you help me better understand the risk to an end user this represents? I just recently implemented some similar login redirect logic and want to make sure I'm handling the redirect value properly.

I agree that just shitting all over people's work is, well, shitty. But I disagree entirely that the anonymous critic behind Read the Fucking HIG ( http://readthefuckinghig.tumblr.com/ ) is out of line or that this kind of criticism is lack

Yeah, it's also called "Newstweek" and it's clearly a replica of the Newsweek website ( http://www.newsweek.com/ ). So, it's definitely a hoax/satire. It's just kind of not really very funny..

Yeah, they are probably using the javascript change event to trigger the enabling of that submit button. Unfortunately, most autocomplete functions don't trigger the change event. It's a real pain; you end up having to poll the form fields

Relevant to this article is Gawker's new beta site: http://beta.gawker.com/ I'm not sure how I feel about that site as a solution to the issues Denton raises in his article, but there is certainly some compelling thinking behind it for an

Well, look at your own article. There's an h2 tag wrapped around each of the subheadings (e.g. "NO MORE H2-H5"). How do you propose content authors mark these up if they don't use an hn tag?

This is akin to complaining that Impressionist paintings don't look "real" and therefore are not as good. I suppose we should be deploring the fact that we'll never, ever know what that starry sky in Arles really looked like because Van Gog

I think the difficulties I've personally had with embracing TDD come down to a slightly different set of experiences: TDD: Spend an hour writing the test (sometimes more if I have to figure out how to properly work with a third-party librar

Thanks for your excellent replies. I realize that part of the difficulties I experience with using TDD in real life is that testing feels "expensive" to me, e.g. I frequently spend more time futzing around with test code than I do productio

Do you find it hard to change directions with a feature or component, because your tests have sort of "locked you in" to the structure you were working on? How religiously do you follow TDD? Do you literally not write a single line of code

I think you're wrong to dismiss most developers' efforts at a REST API as cargo-culting. A half-ass REST API is better than XML-RPC or SOAP, at least in my humble opinion. Out of curiosity, though, do you know of any examples of what you co

I am interested though in hearing about how this kind of inter-application communication could evolve into a more well-defined protocol. REST has become a fairly well defined way for applications to communicate, but it's pretty much geared

I agree with some of your comments, but to be fair this was posted in October 2009, so it's almost one year old. If I'm not mistaken, the new dictionary-style DATABASES setting is from 1.2, which only came out this year. Not sure I agree ab
