At best, the issue I can see here is that Square would make it easy to very quickly and casually skim a card without having to look at it, or be seen writing down the info from it. A marginal advantage if you already have access to the card

Great writeup. I'm just starting to get up to speed on using EC2 and work with Rails too. Did you save that AMI in a way where it's reusable for others? It sounds like you were manually spinning up new instances. Have you had a look at Clou

Are you referring to this edition with the comment on how up to date it is? The release date says Feb 2011. Is that just for the ePub version of older material, or is this a revised edition?

The 37 Signals answer is a good immediate reaction, but there is some due diligence that Google can do here, that can be used for longer term product development, as well as a sanity check of the current state of their product: * Review the

Agreed. As long as there's not a tech angle, I'm happy to see them off the site. Events like what's going on in Egypt are important, but it's not why I come here.

One more point... You seem to be at the same point as me with my 'project' (I loathe calling everything a startup) and keep coming up with more ideas. Resist temptation! Have the core idea out there as a site that at least _some_ people can

There's degrees of launches. If you're going for a limited soft launch, just tell your friends, prevent indexing via robots.txt and limit expectations on the site. And don't post it here ;)

The help page says email adresses are swapped. It would be nice to see some kind of blind, double confirmation process, where both sides get to briefly interact first before that is done. Sometimes, you just want to get to know someone else

Ditto. I clicked 'Help a fellow hacker' thinking it would lead to a page about that process, or with a list of people needing my skill set, but now it sounds like I might be contacted by someone who took the time to write me a personalized

I think early adopters are smarter than that. They don't need to be lured in with the offer of free stuff. The very reason they're early adopters is because they grasp the potential for a new service and how it fits into their lifestyle. No

Your incentive driven approach seems to overcomplicate what you're trying to solve. You're creating a commitment and operational overhead for a new service where it's not really needed. If I'm an early adopter, it's because I already love t

I would recommend against committing to a certain amount of articles per day in you Expectations post. Run the site for a few weeks/months, see how much good content you come up with that you want to post, and how much work you can put into

Well in that case, I find it hard to have sympathy for the ISPs wanting to make even more money. Their bandwidth charges should be equal to their own costs, plus a little room for profits. A little.

What I don't understand is why ISPs are giving their content providing customers fixed rate access. From the article: "In both cases these charges are generally flat fees, not linked with usage..." This doesn't sound like double dipping at
