Practical ideas off the top off my head: Take a fast moving input data stream, and map it to some slower moving output streams. Use a message queue, a web tier, a worker, and implement private and public caching internally in something like

Wow. 17 years is a long time. I would love to hear about your experiences some day. Esri is an interesting company to me. Always been slightly fascinated by it. One of the older software companies and still privately owned. I spent a good c

Most of Esri's core C/C++ tech is fairly beastly. Especially the PE and geoprocessing bits. Spent a lot of time in the Esri space with enterprise customers, worked for a deeply integrated platinum partner, spent time on the campus

Funny thing is, it's not exactly a back of the envelope calc, as technically speaking it depends on your requirements on accuracy (or rather, your tolerance for different flavours of distortion), the projection you wish to draw in, the

That's already the case! Also, having other people tricked into running other-other people's code with the others' credentials against _your_ code. I think WASM will actually be more secure than the exsting www model. See: PO

I never quite got the K8S "it's too complex" hate, but to be fair I haven't scaled it very high. Sure, it's verbose and there are N levels of abstraction, but it's a declarative API for running foo across multi

Agree. The lack of punctuation in Blood Meridian is an artistic decision and aids the flowing, biblical narration and the terrifying yet beautiful aesthetic of the novel. It's intended to be trance-like, feverish and flowing, and I thi

I think this article kind of misses the point. The best thing that came out of Bitcoin isn't Bitcoin itself, it's that it's the progenitor and catalyst to more useful and interesting things like DeFi, smart contracts, distrib

Unfortunately for frontend and the Node ecosystem, it's too late to try and put the toothpaste back in the tube. Hopefully Deno helps with this pain point.

This is a pretty clever application of DeFi, thanks. DeSec? Can't help but wonder if there still would be incentive for lone wolves to slip backdoors and vulnerabilities into libraries though[0]. [0]: https://portswigger.net

Thanks. I was thinking of a CI step that checked the SHA-256 of yarn.lock against a "last known good" value committed by an authorized committer and enforced by a branch policy. Signed audit logs seem like a good idea. Now...how t

Aside from testing framework concurrency limitations, why wouldn't you allow parallel tests? If your running system speaks to the DB in parallel and handles pre-existing data, why wouldn't you want your tests to do the same?

Totally! Docker Compose is so useful for this. I want my tests to talk to a real DB, or a real MQ, or a real instance of a service, because that's what the software does in real life. Running tests themselves inside of containers wit

No mention of Vega in that article or this thread? It's a declarative grammar and toolkit built on D3 (and other viz libs). It's very approachable and addresses a lot of the issues raised in the article: https://vega.gi

I hope this deal results in Visual Studio Team Services somehow getting support for public projects. It is amazing for private ones. Also, paid tiers of GitHub moving to (or on top of) VSTS would not be a bad thing IMHO. I hope both GH an

I think that the question of whether or not to use a monorepo is not a function of "how to organize code for efficient coding". It's more of an actual organizational question; how and how often do you deploy, what are the act

I'm with you on not reinventing DOM, but often you don't want your Document Model tied to DOM - despite nominal similarities - and Slate seems like a good example of how simple things can be made, even for rich document/app t
