But backups are easier to manage with HDDs because you have less media to shuffle around. So for M-disc to be competitive, it would have to be several times cheaper per TB than HDDs, but in reality the M-discs are almost 10x more expensive.

I just buy internal high-capacity (at least 10 TB) HDDs and use an USB SATA controller. I use Borg backup for archival, at least 2 copies on 2 HDDs. It seems more reliable than DVDs.

Not just at the top, you have to go higher than that. It starts with the idea that the market success always leads to excellency.

Sorry to disappoint, but.. I don't want to hire you. I am a socialist, I find labor markets morally objectionable. The above is one reason, putting pursuit of profit above human excellence leads to mediocrity.

I call it (doing the bare minimum required) "organizational laziness" and I hate it. It might be rational, but it leads to mediocrity.

You have a nice theory there, would be a shame if something happened to it. I played this older computer civilization-like space game. In it, there was an hyperaggressive race that always went to war with everybody. They always died out fir

I don't follow your argument in the last paragraph. What has the fact that children get addicted to social networks to do with the encrypted, peer-to-peer communication? It seems to me like they are two different things. While I agree

It's fascinating that somebody sees these things as "original". I used to maintain a 40-year old ETL codebase in SAS. IMHO the original low code movement was the 4GL movement from the 70s (and, according to Wikipedia, rapid a

I have an idea, we could call it FORTRAN, as in "formula translator", get it? Seriously though, creating DSLs is the essence of (understandable) programming. You create abstractions away from machine code towards your problem doma

For example, on z/OS, the whole disk storage subsystem (SMS, but there is more) is separate from the MVS (kernel). Security is also externalized in RACF server (in fact there are alternate products from non-IBM vendors). You can run mu

Actually, z/OS (descendant of System/370) is more microkernel than Linux is. But the problem with microkernels is similar to the problem with microservices - you have to make the executive decisions somewhere, and that unfortunate

Exactly. When I started my job 20 years ago, our company was waterfall, and my then boss (in his 50s) told me - never rely on QA, it's your responsibility as a developer to make sure the code (and product) works. I think he was right.
