I bought one of these laptops shortly after the whole sputnik ppa was launched to replace a stolen macbook. I guess you can call me a beta tester, but I paid full price for the laptop at Best Buy so I could be up and running in a day after

iI felt the sameway . I just used various apis for unscatter.com you may want to see about getting access to the blekko api if you keep playing with it. iI use some of the slash tags they offer for some search views, it's real easy to work

I'm still of the opinion that if you're going to go for competing with Google, Bing, Blekko or even Duckduckgo you're going to have to beat them on quality of results. Reason being that most people are going to go to the site that best answ

Awesome, now I know what to call Unscatter. I've been calling it a search site, because I don't currently have my own index of anything. I like search provider better. Thanks!

I first heard about Blekko through HN. I first learned of their API which I used to build most of unscatter.com on through HN too. The 3 card monte the original poster of this thread referred to, once again heard about it on HN. HN has also

For unscatter.com its simply git pull then supervisorctl restart all, but that app isn't anything more than a some tornado app servers.

Gotcha, I guess I was thinking more along the lines of open source project than actual product. Based on the replies above I see where you're going now. Good luck. Not sure if you're coming back to read this, but I'm curious about why djang

Hmm. I already built something similar at chatfor.us I used tornado load balanced by haproxy for the Web servers instead of Django. Backend is mongodb and I use a small tornado driven zeromq to manage passing updates between the front ends

Not sure I understand the issue. If you're regularly using the API then you're monitoring it. You don't need to make extra requests to also monitor it. You should build your application to alert you if requests to the API start failing, may

My side project isn't exactly a search engine, more of a front end to get recent information from blekko, twitter, Facebook and Google plus. www.unscatter.com I use it to keep up to date with topics on a regular basis and also when searchin

This is exactly what I look for when interviewing sysadmin candidates as well. I'm not sure how well this transfers over to programming though. The actual question was't posted, but in general working with multi-dimensional arrays is a stan

Oh, as johngalt said don't neglect your spouse. My wife and I had our first real night out in months last week. It's amazing when you get to go out and be husband and wife instead of mom and dad.

I'm in a similar boat. I'm a bit older, and my kids are too. One turns 5 in September and the other 2 next month. Since the 5 year old has been born I've started several projects, contributed to a few open source projects and not made a lot

I guess I should note this is a personal project, basically a hobby. If I had more time I would probably be focusing on tornado more. I'm a weirdo who finds learning new languages relaxing

I have just started playing with it primarily to rewrite chatfor.us as I want to see if I can build the full stack without extra dependencies. Chatfor.us uses zeromq and tornado along with virtualenv so I am hoping with go I can speed up de

If you're building the server, can you just puppet apply multiple times? I wonder how Chef handles this. This is going to be interesting to play with. We have lots of automated build procedures which I'm hoping to eventually fold into Chef.

I'll be doing a follow up blog once I'm done building our deployment process for Chef in house. However, I'm not sure you're saying you've already ruled that out and are looking at Puppet instead? So what I come up with may not be very help
