In my opinion it's because if you buy the site then you're buying the users as well. For example if Google purchased Twitter instead of building a clone (Buzz) then they would've inherited Twitter's users. Instead they did build Buzz and

https://join.me/ might work for you. It has a limit of 250 people and it's totally free. Unfortunately there aren't any conference call capabilities with the free version, but they do offer a trial of the pro version, which does come wi

You don't already have a chair, desk, computer, and internet access at home? Air conditioning may cost more, but you'd no longer be paying high gas prices to drive to and from work (which I'm assuming your company doesn't pay for now?).

Battery life is maybe the only thing on that list that has anything to do with productivity. I'll even be generous and throw in the high res external display as an added productivity perk. The rest of the things on your list are nice to h

I use a 17" MBP as my primary computer, but I see it as more of a luxury than a necessity. I'd say to spend your money on a more modest laptop and save the money for your startup. On a similar note, I think it's crazy to see all of these st

I'm betting a lot of them are people who have an idea and want to build it instead of either hiring someone or trying to find a tech co-founder.

I guess you could say that, but replication alone would mean only having 1 copy and that copy would contain the same data that your original set of data contained depending on when the replication occurred. So if you happened to delete a f

I've seen a lot of praise for easyDNS, but I've never used them myself. They have failover DNS, which is interesting. http://support.easydns.com/Failoverfaq.php I guess you could technically use 2 (or more) different hosts for DNS, whic

Have you read them? I'm not denying that it's easy to fake emails, but if you really pay attention to how the emails are written and how natural the flow of conversation between them is then you can see why they're convincing.

IF the allegations against Mark Zuckerburg are true then the answer to your question is don't be shady. From the sounds of things Mark may have done some shady things when he was building Facebook, never thinking that it would get as huge

Their limitation on cron jobs was kind of a deal breaker for me. They allow you to run either a daily cron job (free), or an hourly cron job ($3 per month), but I enjoy the flexibility of a VPS and being able to run cron jobs however I see

I don't run an ad blocker because I feel like watching/viewing an ad is the least I can do to support a free site. Just to be clear, I'm not condemning you for using an ad blocker, to each his own, just clarifying why I do see the ads. Tha

Have you ever noticed that you never have a problem playing ads, but yet the video following the ad doesn't work half the time? That's one thing that's irked me about youtube for a while.

You might look at Egnyte or Jungle Disk. We've used Egnyte for a few of our clients and had mixed results with reliability. Luckily they give you a 30 day trial, so you can try it out. Their pricing is also pretty decent.

Anyone else feel like RIM is grasping at straws here? As an ex-blackberry user I feel like the more that RIM tries to fit in with the "cool kids" the worse their products get quality-wise. That, coupled with the fact that using corporate

I'm definitely not an expert, but I have been looking at the scalability of RoR as well. Twitter was built with RoR and you can kind of take that as a good thing and a bad thing. They had some trouble in the beginning, but from what I can
