And people in the late 1700s were just allowed to do anything? (The answer to that is obviously ‘no’). I’m not even in complete disagreement with your opinion on data centers (like, people are coming up with noise, water use, pollution and

Since when did we restrict people's ability to do things? This question is not the obvious winner you think it is. To me, and I am sure many, it sort of undermines your argument. Even in the most ‘free' cultures, society has _al

It’s been my experience that those that most loudly say they value extreme directness like this are also those with the most fragile egos. If you directly tell them something they did is wrong or non-optimal, they conclude that you’re an id

This seems like a weird hangup. Is it likely? Taking these films back in the 60s might’ve been illegal, but has anyone actually been prosecuted for it in modern times? Haven’t other lost episodes been recovered from ‘illegitimate’ sources w

Is there a reliable guide somewhere to setting up local AI for coding (please don’t say ‘just Google it’ - that just results in a morass of AI slop/SEO pages with out of date, non-self-consistent, incorrect or impossible instructions).

Yeah, the _reason_ this was in the iPhone is that YouTube was a normal and reasonable (if unusual - because sharing videos online was unusual) way to share videos with friends and family. And people cared way less about privacy back then.

There was nothing at the article’s URL for a day or so after it was pulled (on a holiday weekend, FWIW), which I agree isn’t great. But there is, now, a page up at the article’s original URL: https://arstechnica.com/ai/

I have the same worry about LLMs in general - I know that ‘model collapse’ seems to be an unfashionable idea, but when the internet’s just full of garbage (soon?…), what are we going to train these things on?

Is it normal/expected for a news organization to publish that they fired someone? I’m inclined to take the ‘don’t comment on personnel matters’ at face value. They did report on the article quote sourcing debacle at the time - perhaps

LLMs are, fundamentally, compressed lookup tables that map input -> input + next token. Or, If you like, input -> input + list of possible next tokens with probabilities.
