There was a flurry of news reports last year about self checkouts being removed by some chains. For example: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna160234 https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7188556

Yeah, it should not be hard! Cheap hardware is orders of magnitude faster than it was in the 2000s, and we could run dynamic forums written in janky inefficient Perl on it, and serve thousand's of requests a second.

It does feel like a rubicon has been crossed recently, where most things I like are going behind paywalls, and many smaller outfits are heavily pushing Patreon or the like. Anecdotally, I’m paying subscriptions for news sites (mainstream an

It’s anecdotally definitely one reason people work in co-working spaces, or even coffee shops and the like. Some people think these are just used by people who have no quiet space, or no comfortable space, at home - but that’s not the case.

The age you picked here makes your argument obviously right. But what age _should_ people get a phone and be able to use it unsupervised? I don’t think it’s reasonable that it be 21 or 18, even 16 feels quite puritanical.

YMMV, but I’ve found that at least for my display, this: > When Macbook Air M1 is sleeping, external screens connected via USB-C keep waking up every few minutes and then go straight to sleep again. is fixed in Sonoma (yay!)

Replying because I remembered coffee too, and had to look it up. ‘Good’(?) news is that it was decided in 2019(!) that coffee does not require a Prop 65 warning. https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/fact-sheets/coffee-and-p

This is all a bit hyperbolic. The price is still over twice what it was a year ago, and the same price as in October, three months ago.

Right - and I’m all for paying a living wage for all jobs. Being a full time professor should pay well. And what we pay teachers in most places in the USA is ridiculously little. What I’m saying is that we generally don’t expect that part-t

It seems clear in all your replies here that you see ‘alpha’ as a synonym for ‘leader’, and as a somewhat relative term (like, my boss is an alpha to me, and a beta to their boss). Given your definition, of course it’s obvious that it apple

I was just today trying to fix some errors in an old Linux kernel version 3.x.x .dts file for some old hardware, so that I could get a modern kernel to use it. ChatGPT seemed very helpful at first - and I was super impressed. I thought it

Wow, glibc now keep[s] older versions around and adopt[s] an exponential resizing policy. This results in an amortized constant space leak per active environment variable, but there already is such a leak for the variable itself
