I think the model of taking a piece of alumni future income (via ownership in their startups) is a competitive advantage of YC relative to places like MIT. It's a forced donation policy. Going to a non-profit doesn't stop this. NPs obviou

From the outside admissions seems great, no complaints about the people they accept and alumni they create. I just think the organization right now is fragile. YC is unlikely to be around in 100 years while top tier universities are very

Yeah, I agree with you - I think YC is one of the first new organization types that actually has a shot at creating an equivalently prestigious alternative to top tier schools. Wasn't suggesting to convert to a university, but I do think Y

Snapjoy seemed to be taking the right approach to dealing with this issue. Dropbox bought them, so maybe this will end up a solved problem - though the last thing I want is to be able to 'sync' photos out of existence which is why Dropbox

Could not agree more, this is the exact use case for the 'power users' of RSS. And he is right that without RSS I don't know how these low-posting-frequency sites would keep their readership. If I had to give up one, I'd give up twitter o

I held onto my 3:2 thinkpad until it died for exactly this reason. You literally couldn't buy a new 3:2 laptop. Especially on small screens it is so much better.

The 920 is really a beautiful device -- if you haven't gotten your hands on one you should try it out. It's the first phone I can't stop fiddling with since the original iPhone.

Well no tech really goes extinct. Kevin Kelly has a great piece on it: http://www.kk.org/thetechnium/archives/2011/04/technologies_... It just moves to hobbyists / fringe. Mainline agriculture hasn't saved seeds for a long time (coming

Maybe the industrialized farms aren't saving their old seed (because they're likely all using GMO seed), but the small (family) farms still are (especially organic ones). Why wouldn't you use this method? Because it's much less efficient

You can patent things other than methods. For example, If you invent a novel chemical you can patent it - that's the basis of the pharma industry business model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composition_of_matter

The argument is (partially) that you can't plant your iPad and have it grow into 1 million new iPads that you then sell to undercut Apple. Monsanto is arguing that the law needs to be considered specifically (differently?) for the case of

It's a much less mature engineering field than any of the others, so it's still a lot of R&D to get anything done. PhD is a big help in teaching you to do that well. I still recommend it, though at some point in the future it won't be

How is the theory not disparaging to women? Society is run by people at the edge of the bell curve, if you say that there are less women at the edges than you are saying that it's no big deal we have less women in high-ranking positions.

Vannevar Bush is an absolutely incredible guy. If you want to understand the origins of the modern academic research complex and Bush's role in building it definitely check out 'The Making of the Atomic Bomb' by Richard Rhodes.
