I'd try to find a local iGEM team to join. http://igem.org/Main_Page That's the best way to build experience quickly if you are new to the field.

Sadly no, as I'd clearly be making more money. Sri, admit that this is the best Synbio post you've seen on HN.

As a founder of one of the companies mentioned (Ginkgo BioWorks), I have to say this is actually a very nice outline of the industry. It's not clear yet if there's enough of a market for individual services to be broken out and put in the

Comments under the CNN article are universally positive. You basically never see that on news site comments -- seems like there is broad public support for ratcheting down security theater. I don't really understand what stands it up now.

"In another 50 years, would you expect Apple or Exxon to still be near the top of the list?". Is that a trick question? Exxon obviously - they make the thing we can't live without.

I didn't ask any of these questions, understood the larger concept, and signed up. it sounds like you just don't like socks.

This is a terrible list. Is it really likely that the 10 best books for entrepreneurs were all written after 2010? These are just the latest fad books.

100% right on focus, but this part is grating: "But as you know, a few key people in any business have disproportionate impact on the company’s ultimate success. And nobody is more important in this regard than senior management." You see

The social sharing was very valuable for content junkies, b/c the only people who shared stuff on reader were other folks who were heavy users of RSS. Comparing signal to noise from that community vs. my twitter feed is a total joke. When

Given the caliber of people that YC can now recruit - yes, that problem seems like a waste of their talent.

I wasn't at the Demo Day, but it's hard to consider making car repair more efficient to be a problem that really matters. Not saying it can't be a decent business, but your essay about ambitious ideas was pushing people to do better.

This was exactly my thoughts when reading the demo-day list. I wonder how pg reconciles this? Seems like an emerging strategic weakness for YC.

Who are the best 'reversers' out there? I work in bioengineering which is largely a reverse-engineering discipline (i.e. we do a lot of tweaking natural organisms that we didn't design) -- just curious if there are overlapping ways of thin

I actually have the opposite opinion - I'm more worried by the current situation. I think the reason the current web startup scene goes after such small problems is that folks are coming right out of undergrad (or earlier) and haven't had

Forcing people to read ads -- check off another world-problem solved :p This stuff bums me out. Guessing this a solid group of engineers; could be working on something that matters instead.
