I don't know if the author meant to draw attention to "Japanese" in the sense that these people were especially surprised because they were Japanese and not of some other nationality. But I do wonder if the Hacker-Wunderkind archetype is le

I agree that "Clojure" is kinda a silly name, but what else are you gonna call it? I assume Henly wanted a name that conveyed its functional and/or Lisp roots, and the fact that it's on the JVM. Let's try some names using the usual JVM lang

Yes but in the recurrence relation, it said "for all n >= 1". I guess the additional term was the tipping point that let mathematica infer that the meat of the sequence was for n >= 1.

Agreed, don't start with zero for that. There's no real number n such that 2^n = 0, so the the closed-form expression you were seeking won't be found that way.

I guess it really just depends on what motivates you. Grades never motivated me, and I never felt like my academic peers and I were "like-minded", so school ended up feeling more like an impediment to my education than an enlightening exper

Yes, but these warnings can generate false positives if you actually want to do assignment in a test condition. And before everyone tells me that's bad coding style, it is at least a common idiom in certain kinds situations like this very c

Aw, c'mon man, it was a joke. I know it wouldn't run...I was trying to express the ambiguity of the recursive irony, or something. I would never put side effects in a real predicate if I were really writing this. But I would still name the

If I could upvote this article 1,000 points I would. I have dreamed about being a nomad for years. Even if this guy isn't really giving an "objective" view, just the fact that someone has actually transitioned to living in an RV fills me

It's more convenient to think about if your mind is in functional programming mode. Thought convenience is real convenience.

Thanks for the link. I was a business major in school ( gasp ) so I missed out on a lot of math. I find things like this really helpful even if they are not super high level. Just out of curiosity, why is it that "Open University" videos ar

If you have developers that know Java and nothing else, which is not all that uncommon, it's really your only option. And since any developer who can't or won't learn additional languages is probably not very good, using a language like Jav

It's hard to say. I'd probably ask your general practice physician for a referral to a therapist that specializes in adult ADHD. And I say therapist rather than psychiatrist intentionally: A therapist is usually someone with a PhD in psycho

I still find the most confusing aspect of Haskell to be that it makes me feel like I have to think like a mathematician rather than a programmer.

Good point. I don't have a good idea either what the Next Big Enterprise Language should be, but I'll bet that it will not be what it should be. I think an "Enterprise Language" is bound to be disappointing because it's a solution to an u

Okay, that analogy makes sense. As a technical and taxonomic language, yeah something really stable like Latin or Greek (also used a lot in medicine) is probably best. And yes, I was referring to the Church. Fortunately, Sun doesn't have th

I think that's true in some instances. But if you want to keep the Latin analogy going, you have to acknowledge that Latin stuck around because an entrenched organization continued to use it long after it had lost vulgar relevance. And La

It's been hard for me to pin down RMS's exact thoughts on these kinds of things. I think the whole "copyleft" made him and the FSF as a whole seem more communist or anarcho-syndicalist or something, when I doubt that's the actual intent. Bu
