I would highly discourage a non-technical person from trying to manage a foreign outsourced software project. For what it's worth, I've managed a few such projects over the years with developers in India and China. My experience has been th

I was at the Cloud Connect conference last week. In a session on cloud performance Adrian Cockcroft (Netflix's Cloud Architect) spoke and said they do not use EBS for performance and reliability issues. They initially had some bad experienc

I just created a very similar http-based ping based on this, but with the following difference: * Use JSON-P to avoid same-origin-policy request failures (this also fixed the Opera failures) * Repeat request 6 times (1 warmup + 5 measured)

How are you getting around same-origin-policy issues with this script? I noticed the javascript debugger is reporting failures for every request: "Origin http://www.cloudping.info is not allowed by Access-Control-Allow-Origin.". Are you j

Capturing and recording these latency measurements and associating them with the user's location would be fairly easy with MaxMind's free GeoIP databases and Apache module mod_geoip.

This is great, very close approximation to actual latency. We had a similar need on our cloud speedtest http://cloudharmony.com/speedtest and implemented using a Java applet that executed and screenscraped an OS ping to capture latency. W

This is cool, but not earth shattering. It is essentially a management stack/abstraction layer/deployment tool on top of existing AWS services: EC2, CloudWatch, load balancing, route 53, autoscaling, AMIs. It is a PaaS sort of... but single

There are some distinguishing factors between IaaS clouds and VPS: paygo pricing (VM & bandwidth), API, self-service automated provisioning, no term commitments, scale-up/down (CPU, memory), VM imaging/cloning/templating, off instance s

Let's add to this hypothetical... assuming a similar distribution of wealth as in the US and these 10 men had a total wealth of $1000. The top 2 would hold $425/each, the next 2 $50, the following 4 around $10, and the remaining 4 $2.25.

This is true, generally all Rackspace Cloud servers perform about the same in terms of CPU and disk IO, so the small Rackspace instances will outperform small EC2 instances. However, they don't scale well and on the high end, they under-per

Rackspace Cloud used to have the upper hand on smaller sized instances. This is no longer the case with EC2's new 640mb micro instance at about $8/mo reserve. Not top performer, but it gets the job done for lower traffic servers.
