It would be fun to watch someone calmly and rationally explain this impossibility to the legislator. Perhaps with slides about Turing’s universal machine and the x86 architecture. And while you have their ear, maybe convince them that end t

I’m missing something in this oft repeated argument. If non-App Store distribution is the solution, there’s Cydia (or whatever the kids these days use) right? And Android is “open”, isn’t it? Just like TPB, those should be hard to block. An

I don’t understand this one. TFA requests a way to agree on problems without requiring commitment on solutions? If so, I think that’s terrible. It’s easy to agree that I need to lose weight, but that won’t help get me to the gym. Worse, I c

I went to a presentation by the working group behind this. It seemed like a shitshow. Maybe they’ve gained a lot of competence in a short time. Or maybe they are accelerating this to cement the negative interest rates, which could be more u

Thanks for sharing. I gather your optimistic view is founded in sort of taking election promises at face value. I’ve always thought they are more like things politician say to seem cool, so my pessimism builds from assuming they won’t come

Thanks for sharing. Some thoughts/rebuttals: - what if “society just keeps putting along” only until it stops? I heard somewhere that complex empires historically have a life expectancy of ca. 300 years. - I also heard somewhere that t

This is an interesting idea. But I bet it would amount (excuse the silly metaphor) to talking to more and more hyenas to figure out where Scar’s true ideology lies. Maybe it’s hyenas all the way down, maybe not. But why would Scar tell you?

It can’t possibly work like that, logically. Those being deplatformed are as certain as you are that they are right. I’ve been disillusioned about this e.g. in trying to have conversations about religion with believers. No matter how much b

I do that, believing it’s acceptable risk, but I’m probably very poorly informed. My mental model is that it’s technically dangerous if I take an order of magnitude too much, while drinking heavily. Since this goes for most things in life I

Yup this is where this article went off the rails for me. After-tax income makes sense when income is what you’re taxed by; the day job creates the income and the tax. But the day job shouldn’t be laden with all costs of living: only the co

Taken seriously, this would be a very complex system and it would fail to realize its claimed potential. It only sounds good in low resolution. Depending on a bunch of hard questions, devils in the details, you’ll end up with dilemmae where

That’s not so weird. It’s like IKEA shipping you disassembled furniture: they don’t have to pay for assembly (nor for shipping as much air). The client bears the cost of assembly, so if you don’t pay the client’s costs, it’s free.

Yes: Much human progress is faster than generational speed. We didn’t have to wait for Oppenheimer’s kids to start believing neutrons existed. This points to some memetic evolution, which can be behind important changes. Still: average peop

Digression risk: Unless we count human evolution as “learning” I’d disagree: some “metaphors” are surely innate. A snake is scary to babies who have not learned it’s dangerous. Symmetry is beautiful to an untrained eye. Design should be inf

Fun! Yup, metaphors can be great and apt. We can extend the word “harm” to any desired degree, and find motivations like this. Then if we bring the new variable value (harm includes psychological harm) back to an older equation (words can n
