I like my analogy; why not convince me it's wrong? Are there no negative externalities of trying on clothes?

Employers do buy the labor of employees. Think of the employee as the store and the labor as the clothes.

That’s like a store charging you to try on the clothes you don’t buy. I wouldn’t like that.

Sure it does! I could attempt to fly every time I see an open window. It’s wonderful to fear failure.

As I see it, your options are fear of failure, fear of success, fear regardless of success/failure, or fearlessness regardless of success/failure. Fear of failure seems like a fantastic choice.

No, I think the difference gp ignores is that they could either protect false negative real users, and eat a loss for the good of those, vs. ignore real users getting squeezed and boost stock price by...? This is where it gets fuzzy.

So you’re saying that instead of trying to rescue their stock price, Twitter are looking to treat everyone fairly, cost no object?

Social trends in America are never framed in terms of class. Instead, we have to reach for other dimensions, in this case race. We could say it’s plain racism that keeps AAVE down. But it’s such an easy theory to falsify: it predicts that w

The day when China is the size of the US there will be lessons to learn from China . I bet there are many lessons today. But if Iceland remains its current size, neither superpower should treat it as comparable for scenario analysis. I get

Differences in scale are a great reason to throw data out. Past experience gives us lessons for similar cases. The onus is on anybody using a model to ensure the use case is similar to the training data. The US and Iceland are nations but

Of course scale should be taken into account; it’s a sad state that this would count as exceptionalism. Iceland and Portugal should be lessons for entities or similar size, like individual states of cities in the US.

Mostly great article. There’s probably a lot of economic history that applies to cryptocurrency. The fiat part of the title is just FUD. With the same argument, gold bullion would be fiat because a majority of humans could decide they don’t

I still control my machine. I just run software that I don't understand to get content to play. If I wasn't able to run a certain subset of software, i.e. DRM, then my machine would be less universal, not more.

A newfangled med school could conceivably lecture on "Smoking, causation and the cancer of old age" in the intro course, and still turn out great doctors. But it should raise some questions about who backs the school.

It becomes less clearly undeniable once we separate Google into its constituent parts, though. Is search a utility? How about email? Webmaster tools for SEM? WiFi thermostats? It seems unfair to blanket classify Google's offerings as u

That analogy makes sense. So the discussion should be around what makes Facebook as important as e.g. electric power. Personally, I think Facebook is more like a lottery or a tabloid than it is like electric power. Citizens are fine, nay,

Do you think we should have regulated AltaVista and MySpace as utilities, way back when? If so, what would this have done to Facebook and Google's prospects? If not, what makes something a utility?

Are you sure the authors are writing this story out of a genuine heartfelt fear? Do you think the editor who published them shares this genuine fear?

That checks out. Also, I think a lot of "western" stories have this structure too, namely: jokes. Many good jokes are conflict-less stories, that create a contradiction for the reader to resolve with a double take.

You're pointing at a real issue, but I doubt this post a good exempel of that issue. I'd venture a guess that OP is not a prude at heart, just cautious enough to hedge heavily against being perceived to condone Lolicon.
