To paraphrase, 7 is reasonably able, 14 is guaranteed. Knuth cites this in TAOVP vol 2, from Aldous And Diaconis, AMM 1986, pp 333-348.

Handguns are far slower than rifles. .45 ACP usually goes about 1000 f/s. That jet, flying at half the speed of a .45 caliber bullet, weighs at least one hundred times as much. I think that's the point GP was trying to make.

I've been running upgraded bash - and more recently, just zsh, in OSX for years. It has never broken anything here. I think the risk of breaking something is outweighed by the risk of exploit.

This looks relevant (???) http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/business-and-government/lice... It seems to imply a fairly open license that requires only attribution. I don't really know UK law however.

In my view, periodic re-clustering isn't the same thing, though it may be good enough for most use cases. I'd label it "transactionally maintain clustering on a table"

There are warts in the standard library to be sure, but many of them have already been filled in by third parties like Apache Commons, Google Guava, and Joda-time. I'm sure there are others I'm not thinking of.

I don't think it's unfair to say C# took some cues from Java either, but Property syntax, for example, (sadly) has no counterpart in Java, only Object Pascal/Delphi. Historically, the impetus behind C#'s birth _absolutel

What, it copied a single-class, multiple-interface statically typed OO language? Since the lead architect on C# designed one of those that predated Java, I think it is pretty clear what he was copying. http://en.wikipedia.org

I've commented before that I feel that the PostgreSQL project is especially wonderful about code comments. According to the cloc tool, their C code has 700k lines of code and 221k lines of comments. That by itself isn't terribly i

The size of the SKU assortment has such a profound impact on so very many areas of the business, I would venture to say that if two retailers don't have a comparably sized SKU assortment, they're well-nigh incomparable.

I didn't say it was faster, and I didn't say the majority needed to do it. The reason is to be able to customize your build and/or apply patches. Tom Lane fixed a production bug I reported in hours and this got me running fai

That may be the easiest way, but if your intention is to do serious, heavy-duty work with PostgreSQL, please do yourself a favor and learn how to compile and install from source.
