Uber is winning in Chicago because the taxi service is so aweful. I dread riding in the city taxis. On more than one occasion a taxi driver become nasty after I asked them to take a back road to save money. Each time I called for a city tax

"Right to be forgotten" is the wrong kind of control to give to people over their private information. I can understand why people may not want to be tracked over the internet, but from what I know "Right to be forgotten"

Wow! In 25 trials 2 treatments were beneficial and 1 was detrimental. It would seem that the process of finding new treatments is horribly inefficient and perhaps just completely broken given that so few treatments were found to work. I mea

The NN will imitate whatever it is trained on - it is just that some styles of music may require more powerful neural networks.

According to a wikipedia article, the force of the explosion can be estimated by the height of the mushroom cloud.

The estimates being thrown around is that the larger explosion was equivalent to 21 tons of TNT. Does that seem low to anyone?

Looks like there was an initial fire followed by a much larger explosion. My guess is that there was an accident at a major power/refinery plant.

My wife's Macbook has been a huge disappointment. The login is slow, the computer crashes all the time, and safari stopped working. And it's just over two years old. So N = 2.

Funny, the plugin works on every website that I've tested except for just one case - the plugins own homepage ;-)

People have been breeding and cross-breeding our food supply for thousands of years. What can we do about that? I know! Let's use the Internet to identify which foods are pure. Then we can be sure to stick to just those foods when we s

I think this is a sync issue. What happens when the files are still uploading on one device, while being donwloaded on another. Will the files waiting to uploaded disappear?

So if I move a folder out of iCloud before the sync finishes every pending file is lost? Did I understand the article correctly?

After rotating the image 90 degrees, the predicted result changes substantially. The author should not be surprised. A convolutional neural network is translationally invariant, not rotationally invariant.

A major complaint about bitcoin is the wastefulness of mining. But that is precisely what makes bitcoin a commodity. If it were easy to generate bitcoins then people would start printing forgeries. I don't see a way around it.

I love this article! The author points out that as lifespan goes up the effect of aging on fitness goes down. So provided that an organism lives long enough, aging is not penalized by Natural Selection.

I call a 14% tax rate for a single service abusive. Why does a hotel tax exist in the first place, where does that money go, and why is the tax rate higher than the sales tax?

So they can scale up the strength of a connection. Can they also scale down the strength of a connection? You can't build a properly functioning neural network unless you dial the strength of the connection both up and down.

I think I can do better. Michael Rose breed fruit flies selecting for longevity. I believed his work showed that it was possible to extend lifespan simply by introducing the right selective pressure. If this doesn't demonstrate that ag

P.S. And yes, Mother Nature did not build us to last. Natural selection seems to have little regard for longevity.

I'd be interested in seeing if this same problem appears in generative models. It seems like a flaw of discriminative models. Convolutional Boltzmann machines have been developed, and neural networks trained with Backpropagation can be

I work in a research lab and we never touch anything like Lisp. What we use: C/C++, Matlab, Python, R, Fortran, and the occasional Mathematica. I myself have been getting into Julia.
