Do you use the original or homeschool edition? I'm planning to pick up a set soon.

Excellent - I'm planning to use this with Z-Type ( http://www.phoboslab.org/ztype/ ) to learn Colemak. Thanks!

And I'm going to agree with you - if you're learning programming, there's no reason to spend $10-20k. All you really need is a good computer, some relatively inexpensive software, and a few subscriptions to online services that will save yo

Absolutely. If you're able to take a one-time $1-3k expense and turn it into a $10k+ annual increase in salary / profit, that's a huge win. In my experience, the actual returns are much, much higher than $10k/yr for pretty much everyone who

Since you're on HN, I assume you already have a good computer. Invest the money in books that will teach you how to start a profitable and sustainable business, and purchase any additional tools you need to start producing and shipping. (He

Here's my variation: http://personalmba.com/ I changed the headline, as well as included a personal story. Under PIPA/SOPA, there's a high probability my site would've been blacklisted a few months ago due to user-uploaded content, even t

Just installed Gaug.es on my sites - I'm impressed. I've previously used Chartbeat and Reinvigorate (in addition to Google Analytics), and Gaug.es is my favorite so far. The interface is simple and clear, and the iPhone app is nice. The onl

I'm new to Ruby as well (getting back into programming). I'll definitely pick up Dix's book - thanks for the recommendation!

Good to know - I'll be starting from scratch. Any useful Sinatra resources I should use, aside from the canonical Sinatra book?

I've been going back and forth between learning Sinatra and Node. This may seal the deal in favor of Sinatra...

Agreed. My story is similar, with a medical twist: years of chronic lower back pain disappeared once I stopped wearing "normal" shoes. If Vibram ever makes a shiny black leather version, I won't have to wear anything else.

To do what you suggest would require a massive restructuring of the entire US university system, and the governmental systems that continuously feed it easy money. There's a reason why college costs go up as federal educational dollars in

I recently finished converting my main site (personalmba.com) to Jekyll from Wordpress. Once I learn enough Sinatra to build a user creation / login system similar to Wishlist Member, I'll never use Wordpress again.

I just had a daughter, and experienced the opposite. We're beyond the point of financial sufficiency, and I could make a lot more money if I chose to work more. What I really want is more time every day to spend with her AND get work done.
