This is built into the Scala API - foo.getOrElse(bar, "beebop") Stuff like this should be built into the standard language.

Would you rather Java? Where everything is shit because of backwards compatibility? They've put a hell of a lot of work into making everything as compatible as possible with 2.7. At some point you need to say, enough is enough, we're going

I will almost certainly move to RTP within 3-5 years. My fiancee is from Burlington and she's extremely close to her family, so I can only keep her in SF for so long :) I'd like the move too since I'm also from the South. For those of you t

Not sure about that entirely. Remember when computers were given away free with 3 years of AOL sign up in the late 90's? That fad only lasted a while.

I had a fraternity brother in college who was gay. At some point in time, he realized that he was gay, but didn't want to come out. An incriminating picture was posted on facebook and he was forced to reveal his sexual orientation to all of

I can't find your email address on your blog or in your profile. I know you're pretty new there but I'd like the chance to talk to someone working at google now. Submitting resumes online is like dumping stuff into a black hole :(

GWT is wonderful. If you've come from a world of swing programming (like me), it's very easy to build great, responsive GUIs. I'm really excited about GWT 2.0. The new out-of-process development mode will let me debug in any browser, using
