Ok, I have something to add here for the following reasons: * I build big call centers for a living * I'm a really big Telecom Nerd You might be wondering why something as important as 911 is not automated or accessible via any other m

I feel like the topics Priceonomics covers have been getting less interesting over time. I suppose that's natural for a content engine, but this piece left me feeling sort of disenchanted. I'm used to graphs and visualizations on

You make a number of excellent points, but the distinction you're drawing is actually more broad than just justification of liberty. Anytime one makes a differentiation between two things, beauty and ugliness, skill and stupidity, ligh

Just pointing this out, Telecom is part of the info sector and they've been lobbying forever. I would say that google, Facebook, Microsoft and apple (prop 8) all lobby in some form. I mean Marissa Mayer had Obama over for dinner during

This is really cool, but does it scale? I tend to think of Watsi as sort of a one-off, at least right now. Do you think it will become easier to make philanthropic ventures if funding them becomes similar to funding Venture companies? I mea

IMHO, if you poke around in the Nexus 7K gear, it looks like RHEL or CentOS underneath. Cisco's always been very private about the kind of Linux they're running on their gear, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was modified RH

To me, this isn't so much the problem as the realities of producing a phone with a Bill of Materials like the one they're intending. I can't imagine that spec sheet, at the end of 2013/beginning of 2014, is going to be c

That's cool, but what I want to know is: when's Cisco gonna buy RedHat? I think that's a blockbuster acquisition that would make a ton of sense for Cisco. I think it's a question of price and whether RedHat would sell. T

Chances are, with a volume of less than 100k units, and with the Bill of Materials they're generating, I would be surprised if the cost of the phone were under $600. It's possible, but unlikely. I would wager that they can't

Personally, I don't think Ubuntu actually wants the $32M. Remember, Mark specifically says that most manufacturers won't take you seriously unless you order 100,000 units. At $600 per phone, that's only 53k units (the volumes

Echoing other comments below, here's my feedback: Visually it looks awesome, but what it really comes down to is the quality of the code. Most WYSIWYG editors leave a lot to be desired. Second, I am always wary of amazing tools with un

Again, I'm not trying to open a can of worms, but I don't think noting a recent news piece makes me tantamount to a homophobic person. Is it not accurate that the last piece of security news from Turkey was about the SSL issue? Yo

Congrats to Twilio on a textbook example on how to handle a billing outage. While I hope to never to through this I do admire a team that can execute like this. Cheers, from one telco nerd to your team of hackers.
