Guessing the traceroute looks a bit messy because of multiple paths being available. You can use `-q 1` to send a single traceroute probe/query instead of the default 3, it might make your traceroute look a little cleaner.

That's what various networks have reported. It kind of makes it hard to route around an upstream, if they keep announcing your routes even when there isn't a path to you!

In addition to Linode, Vultr, OVH, there are some local home grown "equivalents" Binarylane and Quantum Core, they both have a presence in Sydney, with the former having locations in other cities in AU, BNE, MEL, PER.

> because they'd pay you even better money! That's assuming money matters :-) Often people who are running their own world and in control of their own destiny are happy to stay that way regardless of better money.

For those with some spare CPU cycles and bandwidth you can give back to the project by running a relay server. https://docs.syncthing.net/users/strelaysrv.html Eg that VM running a DNS adblocker, from another front pag

Thanks for taking the time to post a timeline from the perspective of an S3 customer. It will be interesting to see how this lines up against other customer timelines, or the AWS RFO.

Agreed. The condescending downplaying tones displayed just aren't acceptable.

Yeah it's good option for those wanting to get into self hosting. Another option is https://mailcow.email which is a more recent entrant to the email self hosting space.

Fastmail can also pull in from your gmail account. You could do that and tag the emails. It might be a good time saver and save you from having to do manual checks.

Yeah it's just a matter of making a start and doing a bit each day/week. It's surprising how much you will achieve over time.

Based in AU I'm further away than that by latency. As a fastmail web interface or mobile app user I don't notice the latency. CDN for unique items like mail probably doesn't offer tons of gain for the additional complexity.

> My gmail account (josephg@) gets a tremendous amount of email for other people. Same with my josephb@. It's amazing how many companies start sending personal identifiable information to a random email address without validating it

It seems plausible that big organisations might take the contact from an individual as "I haz ur data, omg Haxor!", then call the police. Whereas the approach from a local CERT agency is likely to be taken more seriously, acted on

Route53 also: A) Serves DNS from multiple domain names. A number of variants in .com .org and others etc B) Serves DNS from multiple internet networks / sources. Queries from an end user don't all hit the same Anycast subnet.

They do outsource to Cloudflare. One assumes some behind the scenes infrastructure exists to push and sync updates to Cloudflare.

The internet facing part of Linode's DNS service is hosted by Cloudflare.

Some detailed info which is great, however I am more interested in knowing 1) why, or what, led to the wrong decision being made, and 2) why it took so long to notice / revert.

Due to a recent bad experience of email being mis-categorised, I've taken to checking the gmail spam folder again several times a week, just to be sure :-\

Yes, this is a very annoying "feature" of gmail. If list owners wanted this to be a feature, you could configure it on a list basis, at least in mailman. However nobody does, because it's incredibly annoying :-)

Fastmail was previously bought out by Opera, then a few years later the original owners bought themselves back. So now they are independent again I expect they are a bit more averse to being bought out. That's my hope :-)
