When I read articles like this, I tend to assume that they are exaggerations written by people who feel burned because they didn't get the job they want and that the reason was unfair interview questions. In other words, I simply don&#

Well said. I would also add: why did this bathroom thing even need to be pointed out? Is it not obvious that it and other moments in this movie were hollywood slices of a horrific, decades-long, deliberate campaign of dehumanization and o

Carlin is entertaining to listen to at times, but the information density is quite low. He takes a long time to say not much, all the while sounding quite profound. I'd recommend the classic references instead/as well: * The Firs

Yes, the prominent center, center-left, and leftish new outlets (NYT, WSJ, Economist, WP, etc.) have some bias in their writing. However, most of the authors and staff at those organizations are extremely professional and take their mandat

Whatever you might think about their streaming listings, their DVD listings still contain virtually everything, and they stay there indefinitely. And yet I hear that their DVD business is hemorrhaging cash and has numbered days. This DVD b

What about appearance? I'm a 37 year old self-taught backend dev (a fallen physicist) and I seem to be able to talk myself into a job with relative ease, both big and small companies. I worry sometimes that a significant factor in this

Could you say more about what you mean by "clobbering each other" here? I run firefox/chrome under Xvfb and very frequently get unexplaine `Unable to connect to host 127.0.0.1 on port 7055` from selenium, zombie firefox and c

It's important to distinguish between cynicism/negativity and terseness. Good comments are just that: comments. They contain no emotional content at all and make a technical point. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course, some f

The bellwether of a bad but possibly technically interesting HN comment is one that begins with a humblebrag: "One time a Fortune 500 company hired me to re-write their entire web tier using Django" or "last year, for fun, I

A good reminder that the business model of the free-content internet is a pathetically weak house of cards. Between the trivial availability of ad-blockers and the laughable vapidity of the form taken by most ads, I think we are due for a c

One of the reasons this kind of language bothers me is that it's both clickbait and a part of the general project of drumming up excitement about the sciences for the usual reasons. And while I suppose this drumming up of support is

Longtime NYT solver here. The most interesting thing about this to me is that it belies the common impression that many have that the NYT crossword is "elitist". I mean, how can it be "elitist" if it's routinely co

The CTRL+W thing was a bizzare decision, I agree. Just swap the CTRL+F4/CTRL+W and ALT+INS/CTRL+N bindings and IDEA behaves like every other piece of software in the world.
