Good point. But I'd also be interested to know the experience level of users involved in Nielsen's study. My own anecdotal experience suggests that people less accustomed to the web are far slower at discerning what is an ad and what is con

I do use an adblocker, but even before I did, I think I'd just used the web so much that it was almost like my brain had gotten used to the general pattern/shape of ads on web pages to the point where I just unconscionably ignored them.

women can use the b word - no one else can. This one's actually news to me. I'm glad I never bothered keeping up with trends in political correctness, it seems to be a battle fought over shifting sands that cannot be won.

You say "grown" but D&D originally pretty much was a board game primarily. It was only with the later AD&D that things started getting further away from the classic dungeon laid out on a table using miniatures style play and more to

No, I watched it all, just a long time ago and had forgotten most of it, to be honest. But I had not forgotten the overall thrust of the programme. To try and clarify my view a bit, IMO the terrorist "groups" we hear about today are more li

I'm not wishing to argue that labeling Anonymous as a terrorist orgainsation would be a good thing (it would be monumentally retarded, which is why I also think there's a good chance it will happen at some point, I have little faith in gove

Thanks guys, I'm aware of my options. :P I wonder if there's been a noticeable spike in search terms related to that ad, e.g. people searching for how to say "you are cute" in French.

When I first met the German woman who is now my wife, she could barely speak a coherent English sentence, but we managed. Two weeks later we were a couple, a year later we were married. That was 7 years ago this month. I still don't know ho

You may be interested in reading about the Golden Ratio[1] and more specifically the ways people apply it to web design[2]. Helped me a fair bit, especially when I'm at that point where I'm starting a new design and need a jumping off point

As others have alluded to, the fear does not stem from thinking that the computer is going to kill you. It stems from thinking "If I break this thing, I'm up for $$$$." and "If I break this thing, I won't be able to complete my work." and "

This is 100% correct IMO. astrec also lays out a good explanation for why this situation comes about ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1099573 ) It may also be worth noting that since the last change of leadership the Liberals[1] went t

Sadly, corruption doesn't even need to enter into these issues. The Australian Government can stay well within the law and still manage to screw our Internet nicely.

You make some relevant points. But somehow, I doubt creating the "final solution" fail safe platform was first and foremost in the minds of whoever it was that thought up the iPhone app store model. Nobody likes a monopoly... unless it's th

What I find amusing is this argument I've heard a few times coming from the labels that goes along the lines of that we need their expertise in order to produce and discern the "quality" music... Because they do such a good job of that usua

Well dude, if it were up to me, I would have a "censorship is always wrong" approach. No exceptions. I realise this will never come to pass, but that's none the less how it would be if it were up to me. Censorship is never a force for good
