They did far more than "added a pretty UI". I used IRC for years, and getting it to do the things I use Slack for (mobile interface, file transfers, a half dozen API integrations, near instant search, etc etc) was either painful o

Every time I read this I hear it read in the voice of the villain from the movie Hackers. Which I have to admit was totally a guilty pleasure of my teenage years.

Jeff Atwood's "On Parenthood" is by far the best and most honest piece I've ever read on what being a parent is like. https://blog.codinghorror.com/on-parenthood/

I read this article, or a version of it, four years ago when I quit my last job to go work at an agency. Since then business has only picked up. It's not like these big name agencies employee hundreds of people. It's not like GE f

Me either. I understand the benefits but for side projects and stuff it's just not a very fun language to learn or use. Even Angular, with it's weird paradigms, seems more natural.

Did they fix the issue I heard of where it uploaded those massive files to the cloud with no bandwidth limiting, effectively killing connections with a slower upstream?

Reminds me of Zecco and another company I'm forgetting the name off. Offered free trades for a year or two and then charged the same fees as the rest of them.

Besides questions about revenue and such, can I just say that I absolutely love the landing page. No gimmicks, no parallax, no videos, no fake testimonials, no hero images, no marquees. Just good copy. Not sure if this is because of how qui

Perhaps unhealthy was the wrong choice of word. But the point of the article was talking about the health issues of eating Chipotle. If one of those issues is weight gain then I would most definitely be concerned about the amount of carbohy

When I started college (in 2000) my dad and I used to communicate using this method via ICQ. It's strange but he still pines for it. I do see the appeal. There's something very informal and personal about it. I think the problem n

Conversely, I've found the answers to be less and less helpful and more rude. Just yesterday I asked a question as I thought my web server was spawning a new port for each request. The response was: "You are just wrong. There is n

It's probably my own lack of understanding, but I never really understood the benefit of PHP on Heroku -- it's so easy to setup a LEMP stack on somewhere like Linode, where I have full control and can still scale just as easy.

I've never seen a qualified response to this question. .NET is by Microsoft. It's Windows based. It's been around for a long time. It didn't introduce any new paradigms, and I'm guessing isn't used by a single

There was a whole movie about interns at Fog Creek. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NRL7YsXjSg I admit it could have been edited a bit better (read: more interesting), but it was still fun to get a bit more of an inside vi

This is great, not just for the idea, but how detail the writeup is. I feel as though I could do this even without much Arduino and Node.js experience.

I really wanted to like JIRA, but agree with other people here that it feels very clunky. Figuring out a workflow for a issue and state was incredibly unintuitive. It was the price and company behind the product that attracted me, but in th

I run about 15 Wordpress sites on the cheapest Linode package, using nginx and php-fpm. Of course, all of these are very low traffic sites. There was definitely a learning curve, especially with nginx and Wordpress. I'm much more of a

A disappointing link-bait title from Wired. Another $20-$40/year for such a fantastic service is far from "too good to be true." Especially considering I've had this service for years.

Agreed. Honestly I had little to no experience with configuration files like those used in Grunt before a year or so ago, but I don't find anything more intuitive with what I've seen so far with Gulp, than Grunt.
