Actually, email isn't a bad analogy. Video is complicated, and most people shouldn't build their own proprietary technology. But the outsourcing often happens at the API level: if you use a third-party CDN, transcoder, player, and

FWIW, we feel pretty good about the market size we're tackling. YouTube and Netflix are massive, but you might be surprised how much video is delivered by media companies and non-video technology companies on their own platforms, and t

Yep, we work with a few players now, and have several others in development. Ultimately, we'll work with every major web player and mobile/OTT device. You can also roll your own integration if you have a custom player, though if i

I think the whole point of Tesla is to be an excellent car company. "Electric" and "self-driving" just happen to be two attributes of an excellent car company at this particular point in history.

From the inside, there is far more talk at YC about building a good business and getting profitable than about raising money. PG has advocated this for a long time[1], and YC continues to encourage this. The YC way is "Make something p

What a false dichotomy: Stanford or life as a service worker. Both Google and YC have stopped focusing on college prestige in their hiring/acceptance, because it wasn't a particularly strong indicator of success. I would much rath

I had the same experience with Anathem. It is a little hard to get in at first. But about 200 pages in, it really starts rolling. Great mix of world, plot, characters, and ideas. (Ultimately, it is a mashup of Plato and quantum mechanics.)

A lot of people have this fear. Amazon is a quickly expanding platform with a growing level of lock-in and immense power. This isn't good for the ecosystem - a dominant company can charge a premium, and choice is good. Full disclosure:

Don't you mean: Sell your company for $360M. Join the new company as CTO, and sell for $3.4B. IPO your next company. Get millions in VC. Foolproof.

Be careful, though. For every legitimately good startup that gets to know the YC partners through other channels, there are 1,000 founders who just look desperate. You only have so much time. Building a great company is the most effective

If you're a non-junior engineer, and one of the first ~10 employees, this is fairly common. At least at the point of issuance; 2-3 VC rounds reduces the percentage (but increases the value, at least in theory).
