Almost anyone in America is playing on 'easy mode'. The people playing on 'nightmare mode' predominately live in third world countries.

Being able to break something =/= IT not doing their job. Tossing a brick through a window doesn't mean that the window should have been thicker.

Personal experience is always subjective. I've found that trying to wake from a deep sleep directly will make me groggy all day. Conversely giving myself another 15min of light sleep will clear my head.

The technology cycle generally goes: 1. A few big wins causes a huge bubble. 2. Tons of sub standard tech workers jump on the bandwagon for the money. In some cases these are outright con artists. 3. Average skill plummets as the market is

When I hear something like "only young people work on computers", I envision someone in their 70s who thinks their grandkids are tech wizards because they can program the DVR. Actually being in the field, it's more about young people being

I've been on the other side of this. An interviewee had a killer competing offer that I couldn't match. He was so apologetic, as if he was worried he'd insulted me. I had to assure him that I took no offense and wished him well. Don't know

CPU obsolescence OTOH everything else has been playing catch up. Disk, Network, Bus etc... Sure my CPU has hit the ceiling, but it spends 95% of its time idle anyway. Broadband five years ago was probably a 3-5Mbps link, and storage was a

So you rewrite everyone's code to make it "better" without their permission. Now who maintains all that code? You do. Life's to short to own all the code in the world.

Engineers always present this as a false dichotomy. You can work with other people (and their code) without pissing them off. "Stay the hell out of other peoples code" is no better than "Act with impunity". Thankfully there is a middle grou

The point is network effects and total wealth. Imagine we could import every programmer in the world and put them all in Silicon valley. Hard to imagine that being a bad position for the US. A good analogy would be the financial systems of

Will it be a problem when you have 50 autonomous cars in close proximity? Potential for crosstalk from the sensors? Similar to headlights at night making it so you can see, but blinding oncoming traffic.

Men have been making this trade-off for centuries. It's self evident to us that the world works this way. That's why we don't write articles about it. When reading similar articles from women lamenting this trade-off, the response is a reso

In 1990 a judiciary investigated itself and found no evidence of bias against men only women. Conveniently that was the socially correct opinion at the time. Joint physical custody just means that there is regular visitation. So saying "p

When I'm asked to spec out a new windows based PC, my users compare the price to the Acer at Costco for $349. Then they compare it's performance to a $2200 MacBook Pro. Much of Apple's success is based on forcing good (if expensive) choices
