Literally no one reads your code. No one! Not other engineers, not annoyed people on HN, not even people for whom it would probably be a pretty good idea. There is a common misconception that published code can build your portfolio; this is

I've seen this article every now and then, and it's always fun to read. Something jumped out at me this time, though: > As computer security expert Ben Laurie has stated, Sudoku is "a denial of service attack on human inte

Why are you repeatedly stating that the post is an ad as if it is some sort of dunk? Companies have blogs. Tech blogs often produce useful content. It is possible that an ad can both successfully promote the company and be useful to engin

The post is just about playing around with the tech for fun. Why does monetization come into it? It feels like saying you don't want to use Python because Astral, the company that makes uv, is operating at a loss. What?

This doesn’t seem obviously true. There’s a bell curve of how knowledgeable people are with tech and somehow people I spend time with end up in the tail end. There’s a bell curve of how much they like board games and I end up spending a lot

Does anyone else struggle with getting Claude to follow even the simplest commands in CLAUDE.md? I’ve completely give up on maintaining it because there’s a coin flip chance it disregards even the simplest instructions. For instance, (after

Controversial take, but have we considered that possibly dating apps dont suck, and that this perception is driven by a vocal minority of the people who have the worst experience on them? (A sad fact is that dating will just suck for some

Tangential from your point, but I don’t think this is a submarine article. This is just a single blogger. “Submarine article” typically refers to articles written by large news corporations (NYTimes eg) and incentivized by PR firms - none o

No? But there's a difference between knowing that (which is an obvious fact that anyone would agree with) and walking into your job one day and reminding them you're only there to get paid.

In your OP, your primary argument, as I read it, was that business is fundamentally a business transaction. When I pointed this out, you changed your argument to how there are other benefits to a job. My point is that if you go around and t

Let's not pretend that HN is full of blue collar workers. Most of us here are in software development and have options.

I mean, if I heard you say that, I would probably think you had a "bad attitude" as well. Yes, getting paid is an important part of your job, but presumably you could get paid at many different places, and you choose the one you w

As mostly a Python outsider, in the infrequent times that I do use python package management, uv just works. When I use pip I’d get all sorts of obscure error messages that I’d have to go track down, probably because I got some obscure envi

I’m not sure if you can draw that conclusion. The clojure survey asks where users went to interact with other people who use Clojure. Who interacts with people on SO? I’m sure a vast majority just read the answer and move on. It makes sense

Do you think ++foo + 1 parses as ++(foo + 1)? Despite what you say, this seems obvious to me.

Is this really a difficult precedence issue? It seems quite obvious to me that *foo + 1 parses as (*foo) + 1. One that has gotten me more than once in Python (I really don’t code Python that much) is “1 + 2 if True else 3”. I keep thinking

That's not really a meaningful comparison, either. If you assume every engineer makes ~300K at Apple, perhaps a more meaningful comparison is "Apple loses ~7K engineers for 1 year", which seems a bit more than a slap on the w
