Innovation means doing something new, doesn't it? The last Apple-ish innovation I saw out of Apple was that "magic" touch-pad that just feels like you're pressing it down, even though you are not. What they have done rec

I'm not speaking as a software developer now. I think it's an established fact that "normal" people love (loved) Apple products because they "just work" (worked). The prettiness is a nice bonus, but they key th

I think you're missing the point. We all looked to Apple for technical, user-focused innovation.. now all we're getting is a good-looking and expensive things that's best sold in a jewelers shop. I really can't see this

There is a "too far". When it slides from being an expensive good tool to a very expensive luxury item mostly used for show. It's a lot easier to be pretty than to solve (new) problems. Of course, their watch foreshadowed all

I think you nailed it. Their 40% gross profit margin is quite infuriating. Particularly since they're just milking the franchise by now, rather than actually innovating.

Let me just point out that you just commented to a comment where I said I had been involved in hiring. And yes, I was in some mid-management level. But I was foremost a developer.

You're speaking of their open source mechanical design of a rack-mounted PC? Yeah, relatively speaking that is entirely unsubstantial. The mere fact that you're comparing this to the amount of research that goes into radio/ne

No, it's more the fact that I have been involved in hiring rounds in SV and seen the insane amounts relatively speaking crappy devs are demanding.

Regarding the "easy hipster" part - I exaggerated for effect. That is the perception people have on SV developers, for right or wrong. Meanwhile, I'm from Sweden so I'm perhaps just an outside observer to this spectacle.

I think you're mixing things up. a) These companies do love to brag about technical accomplishments. They each have hundreds of product marketing and engineering people for this purpose alone. b) When they do sell, they will indeed dou

I beg to disagree. I do think that what was designed back then (TCP, DNS, etc) was elegant. It was a great foundation.. but because they were so elegant and good-enough, and because of the Internet hyperscaling in the 90s and onwards, there
