I see no reason why a backend web developer wouldn't know html/css and pure js to an acceptable level. You don't have to be a Node.JS ninja on the frontend but definitely have a good grasp of what's going on on the front

I agree, PHP is more than viable to build companies, and has proved it again and again. As did Ruby :) The fact that PHP isn't my favorite language is really besides the point. Those vocal Ruby/Elixir/Go/Node enthusaists

Looks like the competition from Gitlab is very real, first free private repos and now this in a pretty short time span...

Could be a lot of things, but my guess - maybe seniors don't find your offering compelling enough? Try avoiding "young teams" and "beers" and put more "healthy snacks", "work life balance" in the

I hear you. But a person like you would do even worse in remote work. The little social contact you have will be reduced to almost zero. I'm an introvert myself but I do see a big risk for isolation and depression if I worked remotely.

Humans are not robots, we may be some sort of an algorithm but a very complicated one: we need emotional bonding and physical proximity is very important for that.

You're simplifying things. I don't think parks or co-work spaces will cut it for most people. Many software developers are introverts to begin with so meeting new people will become impossible for them in a remote work setting.

I don't know how reliable Payscale is but it's showing software development salaries in Germany to be 2x those in Poland.

"Good news" depending on who you are. If remote really becomes a common thing US programmers will start earning Europe salaries, and Europe programmers will start earning China salaries. I don't think it's going to becom

I guess that's lovely news if you're into anarchy, idk, not seeing the romance everyone else seems to see in this movement. France does need to reform hard though, they are right about that.

Ever since the famous twitter drop out of Ruby/Rails many new enterprises adopted it. Gitlab, Stripe, Coinbase, these companis are worth tens of billions of dollars. I'm not talknig about the older generation (Shopify, Airbnb etc

You just never bothered digging into Rails and going through at least the majority of the documntation. I tried playing around with Spring, guess what? It sucks, the amount of reading you have to do just to try and get a hello world is imme

It's not just code bloat, typed languags and frameworks like spring have to dance through hoops to allow for easy testability. Spring is founded on the idea of dependency injection that's supposed to overcome that. In Rails/P

Sounds nice, definitely not a game changer, the way websockets wasn't a game changer. I think being real time can be easily achieved with existing tools and it's somewhat overrated anyways.

I think it's normal, things lose their excitement at some point. That's human nature. You will probably start resenting clients in 10 years. Also - you yourself will change. You will grow older and might find more value in things

What are you basing that it's going out of fashion? Shopify and Github both run unicorn which is pre forking as far as i know. I think some companies prefer to prevent thread safety issues and pay the extra performance cost.

javascript has no type hinting, there's typescript but tons of people use plain javascript. Same for python (tons of code was and is being written without hints). The same goes for ruby.
