Thanks, signed up. I used the info from Maass's novel to create a plot diagram for my story. In the end that's what we are - story engineers.

There is a book out there called "Writing the Breakout Novel" by Donald Maass. The book was a tremendously help for me in deconstructing my plot and characters. I rewrote and even rearranged entire chapters. I had subplots that ha

I'm a published author and I agree that you shouldn't compromise the elements of your storytelling, but you should at least value their input and look for patterns. The rest is noise. For example: I got criticism for character nam

While I don't think you should know how to implement bubble sort on the fly in an interview, you should probably understand what it is at a conversational level, along with merge sort and quick sort, especially if the position is senio

When asked this, I've countered with "I was hoping to make $X" (where X is much more than I make now). Then I follow up, but "I'd like to learn more about the company before I make any decisions on salary." Thi

Just enter your current salary + $30,000. Unfortunately you have to play the game. If they call you for an interview it means they think your are worth that much.

This headline is very Onion-ish. Then I clicked on "The Tenacity of Tech Recruiters" and my hunch was confirmed. Well done.

That's what I had to do. My manager told me of this metric (set by the higher ups in a contract with the offshore company) along with "there's nothing we can do." I essentially became the code repository sheriff. Eventua

I think is is true at the earlier stages of one's career. One you get older and have to start feeding a family, the idealism wears off and you start finding yourself compromising your morals and coding shit to make a deadline. But the

Focusing on poor metrics such as “issues closed” or “commits per day” I once worked at a company that used an offshore company to work on certain modules of a large project. They would commit code that my team would have to then code revi

Sorry, but nothing beats working from home in your own home office. It's an environment you have complete control over.

If someone "steals" your startup idea, it is probably a good idea to begin with. I'd be ecstatic that the idea has been validated. Over the years I've met developers and others who've talked about how they have a gr

The best time to bootstrap is right after a crash. Many years ago I worked at a startup that flamed out. A couple of guys went off and developed a similar product to fill the niche abandoned by that company, and no VC would even touch that

Sometimes I feel that a well-publicized hiring binge usually precipitates a layoff. I've seen it happen enough times that it makes me skeptical when I hear terms like "explosive growth". Over the years I've had recruiter

Disrupting that industry would be tough. Zillow came close, but the industry in general is so protective that anything perceived as a minor threat is blackballed. My bro-in-law RE agent bashes Zillow all the time. I think baby steps are ess

Although I like going to movies on occasion, the ability to turn on subtitles (to better understand dialogue and overcome my kids being loud) and pause/rewind as needed makes watching at home more enjoyable.

I was thinking the same thing. We have been conditioned in the US to fear the government to such degree (the IRS in particular) that it makes these calls seem plausible and frightening to the more vulnerable segment of the population.

Meh. A prime number year last happened in 2011. Just kidding... happy new prime number year! BTW I'm really looking forward to the next perfect square year: 2025 (45^2). It last happened in 1936, and won't happen again until 2116.
