This reminds me of a story I read in an Escher biography: Escher would receive letters from mathematicians, saying that his work exactly visualized this or that theory. Escher himself did not understand what they were talking about, as he w

When I started coding I did it in notepad. I thought it was hardcore and cool. I was young and stupid. Then I adopted an IDE and I became much better at writing code. To me AI is just another tool that helps me solve problems with code. An

If I quit I don't get unemployment benefits. Eventually there is some money, but I'll have to first spend my savings and eventually sell my house (it's not enough money to pay the mortgage). This in western Europe. I think in

15 years ago we didn't have so many algorithms. I think Facebook still sorted by recent back then. The pervasiveness of algorithms is a symptom of the change that has happened. It shows how companies started to compete more and more fo

I listen to radio quite a lot. There are commercial-free stations that play whatever they believe is good music. My favourites are: - Concertzender and all its theme channels. The main channel has a lot of classical during the day, but jazz

Not all interviewers are experts. If you are building out your business you will be hiring roles that don't exist yet. Of course that brings different requirements for that first hire, but judging their skill level might prove very har

Same. Python has a certain elegance when writing it, but the lack of static typing, a nightmare for dependency management (recently had to do a change in Python and spend about 80% of my time getting the dev env en dependencies right) and r

This x10. When working with high variety data there are so many things that can go wrong (esp when working with external data sources), so you want a strongly typed compiled and memory safe language. I really believe that as data engineers

Scrum only gives an estimate for the next sprint and maybe the sprint after. In many cases you're talking about 4 weeks horizon at most. I would not be happy if a contractor told me they can only estimate the work on the kitchen, but n

Back when I went to bars with way too loud music I would always plug my ear when someone was shouting in it. Made it much easier to hear what they were saying. I don't think I have any auditory disorders, but you never know.

I know that for some (many?) people the mind-body connection is taboo. They'd rather see the body as a separate machine than recognizing that it's affected by psychological processes. A reason could be that they want to avoid deal

It also claims that SQL is hard to learn, while in my experience it is quite easily picked up by many, including less tech-savy. It is hard to master, but that goes for pretty much any skill.

Imo dbt sits in the analysts space. SQL is the language they know and dbt is the best solution to scale that. In that sense it should only be used for last mile data transformations. Not for wrangling raw data into neat tables.
