Wholeheartily agree with the author's sentiments on the value of textbooks. Not because of the medium itself, but because they're (usually) accompanied by well thoughtout examples and practice problems. When initially starting a d

Funny you mention vim vs emacs. tmux also supports vi keybinds, big selling point over screen IMO.

While Australis is neat, doesn't bother my experience much since I use pentadactyl heavily and most things seem to just work. My pet bug still lays untouched though. https://bugzil.la/444284

Because of all the great benefits of centralized accounting of our infrastructure and exported resources we started using PuppetDB when it was in its relative infancy. We did make the mistake early on of using the built in DB backend instea

What's OpenSearch on mobile? Can we finally add custom search providers like desktop version from http://mycroftproject.com/ . It really seems to be an odd exclusion since sync takes care of everything else.

For me Markdown wins just because I'm used to dealing with it daily on GitHub. Sidenote: Wish Github Flavored Markdown would adopt some nice things from Pandoc, like multiline tables.

While I don't dabble often in markup, I'm curious. Is Sass still mostly entrenched in the Ruby world (any alternative implementations?) or has it picked up adoption with other devs compared to Less?

I thought the advantage of 2's complement was that we only had one zero and no additional conversions to do arithmetic on negatives, simplifying operations and ALU implementations. Without normalization, how would that work with DEC64?

I don't agree with the top response's recomendation of using redirects to represent sunsetting of versions. That behaviour breaks POSTing. [1] > Note: When automatically redirecting a POST request after receiving a 301 status c

One use I've come across for inferring genders was tackling record depupliction across multiple data sources. In one data set we might have the gender information of an individual but have it be missing in another. Turns out gender is

My main experience is with Puppet, though I have migrated legacy systems from CFEngine as well. My main gripes with Puppet are that, at times, the DSL is restrictive and you have to either rely on ugly Execs or dropdown into Ruby extensions

One approach I've seen for portable Ruby apps is to use JRuby. You gain the ability to package your code as a standalone, compiled java app for distribution. From that it becomes as simple as running 'java -jar app.jar' or us

You get past most of these syntax nitpicks after a while. I wrote plenty of Lua at my previous job, but every once in while would still forget about globals by default. I really would love to know why they went ahead with that design decisi
