Robert Zubrin figured out a plausible plan to put a colony on Mars, yet the article fails to mention Zubrin and his Mars (Semi-)Direct plans. Colonizing Mars with a small team of experts is possible and within our technological and financia

Good point! Indeed HashCash is very similar. And probably where I actually got the main idea, as I'm absolutely certain I read about HashCash long ago. Seems that the idea was left to ferment in my head after all these years. One diffe

But still, why VMs? A container seems even better suited for this purpose, since the only thing really required for this use-case is a certain configuration of system software as well as a separation from the rest of the system. Lxc/lx

After some googling for what Suter is, it seems to be a system which detects electronic emissions sources, compares these with the known emitters to ID them, then somehow it accesses the enemy communications network to jam/disrupt/

I see what you mean. To avoid the sheets being too far apart, the torus would have to have a big radius. And then the non-torus stack of sheets would have to repeat many times i.e. it would have to be very long. Maybe there's a better

Triggering civil unrest and such is not really required to reduce population sizes: as we seem to be tracking ca. +3.5 C increase in average temperatures by 2100, the reduction in population levels will happen automatically by extinctions o

Yeah, could be. I thought it might be possible to effectivize intracity rail traffic via an on-demand mini-tram service, given self-driving trams and computer-optimized routing. Kind of "packet routing", if packets were trams.

I agree with you and I doubt we'll see self-driving cars before we see self-driving trains (like trams in cities). The problem space is vastly more simpler for self-driving trains; trains move on rails, rails do not move, trains/t

I take it your card is pretty old. There's always an option of staying at an older OS (like Ubuntu pre 16.04) to keep fglrx. What is your AMD card, by the way?

Free text? You can just as well pipe structured binary data (such as audio or images) through one or more processing elements. The processors need to understand the data, of course. There are also other IPC mechanisms, like D-Bus.

Yeah, it is a toy example on purpose. Macros really shine when you need to do a bit more complex stuff, there is certainly a cutoff between ease of regex "from the top of my head" vs. spending time formulating it.

Maybe you can cover macros since they are conceptually very simple and very powerful. They may seem a bit complex but are quite simple. Basically you just record your editing movements and play it back. How macros work: press q x to record

I never understood why, if the situation becomes so bad that government-issued money is worthless, would people prefer gold instead of, say, water, toilet paper, medicine, access to a dentist, and so on?
