I think the competitor they're addressing in this case is tossing up a forum and calling that support. A competitor is not always another business.

I don't know much about Yuri, but I've never met anyone who regretted taking money from Ron Conway/SV Angel. He's one of the nicest and most founder-friendly investors in the valley.

It might be easy to do in a spreadsheet, but that doesn't mean it's easy to do in a politically realistic way.

I hope to God that they fix Unity by then -- my non-technical spouse loved Ubuntu netbook edition, but ultimately dumped Linux when 10.10 came along because Unity just had too many problems.

On the downside, I think you'll be disappointed with the bicycling situation in SF. Yes there are bike lanes, but it seems like automobile drivers are hellbent on murdering all bicyclists. On the upside, if you like the outdoors, there are

It depends on what you like. I spent my entire life until I was 27 in the frigidity of Northern Minnesota. After that, I rather enjoy the fact that nearly every day in Austin is a t-shirt day.

"Why can't great hackers indulge in pointless experiments in scalability without suffering the ridicule of their peers?" There's nothing wrong with that, but you shouldn't do it with your startup. Optimization is inherently limiting -- you

It's extra annoying that this was referred to as the "nerd ideology" by Mr. Lanier. Anyone with even a cursory understanding of geek culture knows that while it advocates institutional transparency, it also advocates personal privacy.

Something that I think a lot of people don't realize about YC is that it's not very fun. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of great YC memories, but the pressure was enormous. We had yet to raise and so we were operating on shoestring. My

Google isn't Apple. Google is experiment driven. Similar advice several years ago might have been, "Google needs to stay they hell away from E-Mail! They're a search company." I don't think it "costs" Google anything to have many projec
