Lost me when they got the definitions of semigroups and monoids wrong. Semigroups are not required to have any identity, and the monoidal identity needs to be both a left and right identity.

The answer is no: every time you apply Human(), you reduce by one the number of legal moves at every given game state. After some finite number of iterations, there are no longer any legal opening moves.

FWIW, I found the EPA [1] and CDC [2] sites on these chemicals to be extremely informative. Definitely gives me an appreciation for the "good" parts of government. 1. https://www.epa.gov/pfas 2. https:/&#x

Exactly. So suppose at some generation, the fraction of mosquitoes with the modified trait is p (and the unmodified fraction is 1 - p), and suppose that all mosquitoes are equally fit. A random child in the next generation will have the mo

I don't think the data requirements are that realistic. While the actual interference patterns on a hologram would be ridiculously large to send as a bitmap, it's easy to compute the interference patterns for the superposition o

Yes, it could be bad, but at the same time the "@case" isn't the only indicator that this class is special. A case class definition can be very visually distinct compared to a normal class. One thing case classes let you do is implement fu

Yes, probably if you're starting from scratch. But I think in general it's good to have a flexible language which lets you write code in any reasonable style. Hopefully this library (the AST transformation part, not the specific macros) i

Other author here: Like lihaoyi said, it's true that the way we defined things doesn't match standard Python namespacing, but it saves some typing and I think it's easy to get used to the semantics of our case classes. Our macro just trans

It looks like the API doesn't give access to the whole shape of a ship - only its centroid position and the direction of the sharpest vertex. Do the other vertices not matter? In any case, we should probably be able to compute which edge

One thing the article mentioned was that people are choosing not to have kids. In this case, it seems that there should be an extremely high selection pressure for people to be genetically more predisposed to want kids. And if this does e

Sure, I may have actually done better on the Putnam than he has. I've gotten top 100 and top 200 before... but that really wasn't the point I was trying to make. I was just making the correction because the original claim is, at least to

Nit-picky corrections: 1. Top Putnam score in Colorado . There's a pretty big difference between that, and say, top Putnam score in Massachusetts (which is more likely the same as top overall due to many Putnam Fellows coming from Harvard

Energy is certainly not being generated. The energy of the light output will be equal to the heat absorbed plus the electric energy input. If you want to think of it in terms of temperatures, I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I think

The linked article and the title are pretty misleading. But if you go and look at the abstract for the paper, they mention that the extra energy comes from pumping heat out of the environment.
