Amazing, looks like the ban was lifted where I live in NL in May 2025! Thanks for the heads up, I had missed this, despite being fairly certain I had checked relatively recently. https://www.sanquin.nl/system/files/

I was born in the UK during BSE, and as a result I can’t give blood in Europe. People forget it but the scars are still there.

I’m not sure you think otherwise, and are just calling on the US as an example since the HN crowd is heavily US skewed, but just for the avoidance of doubt, this is a German event.

Some journals support “green open access”, where you can share your article minus the journal’s formatting on open repositories etc, sometimes some time after publication, which is usually free. I can’t see any mention of this from the ACM

I recently completed a MSc with a focus on bird bioacoustics, and this problem goes for the whole ecosystem/pipeline: there are very few (non-proprietary) off-the-shelf, ready to go products. Even the most popular methods that are exto

This post references Logan Williams’ BirdNET experiments, he did a really fantastic talk on that project at WHY2025 (the Dutch hacker camp) recently: https://media.ccc.de/v/why2025-240-is-ai-for-the-birds-the-b...

I’ve seen this exact trajectory play out with several friends. Get a good degree in robotics engineering or the like, options are working for civil servant pay at a defense subcontractor, or Ocado. Pretty much it.

Similar feelings about the repeated references to the apparently agreed consensus that individual action is pointless vs systematic change like switching to a renewable energy system. Jevons Paradox would like a word.

I’ve never seen a claim like this levelled at London, famously a place increasingly losing social housing stock for luxury housing. The only thing I can think of is this is a new twist of the complaint that a lot of London’s housing is left
