If you're on Windows, setting up Ruby on Rails and using it can be pretty difficult because you need a proper terminal, and Windows' Command Prompt sucks. We've used Vagrant virtual boxes with Ubuntu with our Windows users at Bloc. There ar

I already wrote about this[1] but the time period where I learned the fastest and the most programming knowledge was the winter of 2008 when my cofounder and I worked out of the computer science building, and various other buildings on camp

Dev Bootcamp requires 8 hours per day over 10 weeks, although I've met their students and they're an intense group--they usually stay longer and they go in over weekends too. It's probably the most immersive experience you can get out there

I don't want to discount the existing resources out there either. One of the first things we have students do is start out with some reading material, and Beginning Ruby is one of them. We'll also be recommending Michael Hartl and Zed Shaw'

I'll probably take a karma hit for this, but I find it neither intellectually stimulating nor effective to talk about whether we're in a bubble, especially if it's fear mongering. If you want to convince smart people they're living in a bub

I edited my comment to be more neutral towards Methamphetamine; I wasn't aware of the significant dosing differences and that's important. The real problem is the way the studies were conducted. They didn't test hair samples to verify wheth

Nobody knows what happens to long term chronic users of MDMA. But we do know that the propaganda that was spread by US government funded studies has been debunked. Scare tactics should be treated with strong skepticism. Before club users go

There are two major misconceptions around MDMA, both funded by flawed government studies. The first misconception is that MDMA causes "holes in your brain" but this study was debunked. The original claim was based on the notion that MDMA "d

Early on, I asked most YC founders I met whether they did testing in the early days, and almost all of them said "no". I've also not written tests in the past simply because it's a time investment--why test if you could be working on someth

I like that they focused on "this is a service problem." This is something Alexis Ohanian mentioned when he started talking about SOPA and PIPA on TV, and I recall that point being dismissed pretty quickly (although unfairly). This article

From what I understand, DHT has a big trade-off vs BitTorrent: DHTs are crawlable[1] and copyright holders can more easily track who holds copies of what yet it's easier to duplicate search engines like TPB within hours for the same reason.
