Why? No, seriously, why do you think you have to switch if you are productive with VSCode? I used to be all in with Vim and then Emacs many years ago. I can manage pretty well with both to this day. But I moved onto VSCode a few years ago a

To each their own, but know that you are stuck with a really old version of bash if you do that, and it has some “interesting” bugs in it. See something I wrote a little while ago on this topic: https://jmmv.dev/2019/11

I think this is what Radiopaper ( https://radiopaper.com/ ) is what it’s trying to solve. Previously discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31210680

As I read somewhere recently: At 20, you worry about what others think about yourself. At 40, you don’t care what others think about yourself. At 60, you realize that nobody was thinking about yourself anyway. Pretty liberating when you fac

Add your npm directories to the virus file exclusion lists of Windows Defender. Note that some of the directories may not be obvious (those under AppData for example). The speed improvements are massive for tools like these that touch lots

I see FreeBSD was mentioned in a different comment, but I’ll cast a vote for NetBSD. The kernel abstractions that allow for portability make the code quite easy to read. Back in the day, I was able to write a file system from scratch by jus

I have a Surface Go 2. It’s bigger than the GPD but still small and lightweight enough that I carry it everywhere “just in case”. Even if it’s not the most comfortable machine to code on due to keyboard constraints and general speed limitat

Stuff You Should Know is my favorite. I don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned here yet: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-stuff-you-should-know-269... Their cousin Stuff They Don’t Want You To Know is also entertaining.

My daily driver at home is a Mac Pro 2013, on which I run Windows 10 with these steps: https://jmmv.dev/2022/03/windows-10-mac-pro-2013.html It could definitely be faster, but it’s fast enough for almost everythin

This reminds me of how I was described self-driving cars at some point: yes, they are a great invention, but actually… they would not have been possible without many more other inventions happening earlier: GPS, digital maps, route mapping

I know it’s not the same, but if you are looking for a small form factor with a real OS, consider the Surface Go 3. I have the 2 and have really enjoyed it so far. Not the fastest thing in the world as you would expect, but I have even done

Interesting theory, but I don't recall this happening. As other commenters are saying, there were indeed patent-related issues around FAT and the like, and huge interoperability problems with NTFS (to name one, but that's irreleva

I ran Warp 3 on a 386DX 40Mhz with 8MB of RAM. It wasn’t the fastest thing ever, but I recall it behaving better than Windows 95. My next computer was a Pentium MMX 166 with 16? 32? MB of RAM and the thing flew there.

Is that right? I don’t remember 3.51 as being the thing that made OS/2 go away. (I don’t recall ever seeing it and NT 4.0 was also not super-common.) Sure, NT was the right technology to do so, but my recollection is that Windows 95 is

Agree with the premise of the article: changelogs—or rather, news files—are not the commit history. Describing the changes between releases at a high level is super important but also a skill that’s hard to acquire. I thought I had written

I went through the process of de-Googling my life a few months ago after the announcement that the free tier of GAFYD was finally going away. I had been wanting to do the change for years but postponing it out of laziness, and that was the

I know, I know. And the Amstrad I had with Locomotive Basic only had 128k of RAM and (as I read now) 48kb of ROM -- yet it fit the whole language in there, which was more complete than what EndBASIC currently offers. But things have changed

Because at the onset of the project, I favored implementing structured programming constructs (if, while, for) and ended up with an AST evaluator for the execution engine, which makes it hard to retrofit GOTOs in it. Some form of jumping or
