How many attacks have they stopped that would have DoS’d a significant fraction of the world’s Windows machines roughly instantly? The ends don’t justify the means.

Would not shock me for AV companies to immediately work around that if it were to be implemented. “You want our protection all of the time, even if the attacker is corrupting your drivers!”

The best solution I’ve found is an HDMI matrix. If all you need is to connect your HDMI devices to the TV and an older receiver, get a 2x2 or 4x2 matrix, have one of the outputs go to the TV and one to the receiver. This solves the problem

It’s not weird UX when you consider why it’s so hidden: to increase “engagement” metrics (i.e. make it more likely for you to click on other videos, view/interact with ads/etc). Same reason the feature is unavailable on iOS (even

I’ve found that it works pretty well, at least in my home environment. The first time going to a new host, it has to include https, but subsequent visits auto-complete to the host rather than a web search. For example, I can type “opnsense”

As much as modern Ethernet standards are much nicer (my house is wired for and running 10Gb everywhere, with 40Gb Infiniband to a couple locations too), 100Mbps still has its place. Specifically, anything embedded, slow, and/or cheap.

That… actually doesn’t seem as bad as I thought it would be. Obviously it’s not going to be evenly spread across the globe, but that’s about (napkin math) 350μg/m^2/year. Even over a century that’s barely a light dusting (to be fa

I personally measured over 90dB in a friend’s apartment downtown. NIOSH recommends exposure to levels above 90dB for less than 30 minutes per (work) day. She said it was that loud 24/7, and I believe that. If you have some evidence tha

Coverity will definitely warn you about use-after-free. It’s not a “correctness” tool, it’s a static analyzer and probably the best one out there (imo). Yes in this use case it’s probably not too important to care about, but really any code

Unless I’m mistaken, Rhapsody (released 1997) used LF, not CR. At that point it was pretty clear Mac was moving towards Unix through NeXTSTEP, meaning every OS except windows would be using LF. Microsoft would’ve had around 6 years before t
