I know a number of teachers and administrators, and caterping's comments ring true. It sums up what I hear over and over. At this point it comes down to what is the low hanging fruit? Of these problems what are the easiest (and/or best valu

I agree. I recommend "A Mathematician’s Lament" by Paul Lockhart. It's an excellent essay on math education. The entire paper is long but even the first 5 pages are great. It covers everything from the unacknowledged creativity that is invo

I generally support not displaying points on comments. But I did run into a case where it would be useful to have some sort of feedback on a series of comments (even if it's just dots or some other non numerical indicator). I was reading a

I have seen a good hack to get around this problem. At the end of the article add a link "Discuss this on Hacker News" linking to your submission of the article here. Then you can just tweet your article directly and all the HN'ers will cli

I think it's bold of Amazon to launch essentially a minimum viable product and beat Apple to the punch. Now they have customers and are getting meaningful feedback to make future improvements. You rarely see this outside of Apple and startu

Just that I don't listen to many of bands/artists that put their songs on Amazon MP3 may make this offer less appealing. I don't know much about this but cdbaby[1] will do that for what seems like an affordable price. It just takes a bit
