Ah, I was confused, but now understand. The Computer History Museum has a Difference Engine which calculates polynomials. The Analytical Engine has an ALU and control flow, and is Turing-complete. The first Turing-complete device, in fact.

Argh, can we please stop using exponentially recursive Fibonacci as an example to parallelize? Because using a linear (or even constant-time) algorithm makes it moot. How about a big parallel mergesort or something?

Yes, but the problem is that it's just one approach out of many, so when using other libraries and APIs, you have no consistency. (For example, you'll have to wrap their classes in your refcounting scheme, and unwrap when passing them back
