Just a note: NSCache is dangerously busted (as of Mountain Lion GM, 10.8 (12A269), including 10.7), and tends to deadlock rather easily. Particularly, when the system sends a "memory pressure" notification, such that the cache is supposed t

Though of course if the HTML is requested again you could just add another script tag.

I've had problems with mtmd (Mobile Time Machine) really slowing down writes (and all disk stuff) since the Lion pre-releases. With that off (sudo tmutil disablelocal) things are pretty smooth.

If I read this right, much of the weight reduction is because a large component of the electricity-generating reaction is already plentiful in the atmosphere, so it doesn't have to be carried around with the battery. But as the battery is d

One thing that's not clear: Must the target device be connected to a particular wi-fi network, or can devices even be tracked while wi-fi is on, but not connected (or connected to a different network)?

Indeed, looks like an extension of that to HTML and images. With the HTML is signed, then scripts just need to be hashed, not signed with your key.

On HFS+ on OS X, most file writing is done atomically, by writing to a temp file and atomically switching the (conceptual) data pointer of the target file, aka FSExchangeObjects. It's common to end up with some of these temp files in ~/Libr

On PPC Macs with Open Firmware (pre-EFI), FireWire DMA would be disabled if a boot password was set. I haven't come across any details on recent models...

Yes, email headers are not authenticated. Yes, mail filtering software accounts for this. Open wi-fi has nothing to do with it.

Thanks, FastBit looks quite interesting, but the site is so... academic. So much great research is lurking behind "unassuming" web presences. 'Someone should do something!' https://sdm.lbl.gov/fastbit/

We're long overdue for a new direction in spreadsheets. (It's disappointing that Apple's Numbers and Google Docs Spreadsheet are so uninventive.) Is anyone aware of other 'experiments' like this?

That makes me shudder. Security footage "compressed" this way wouldn't stand up in court (I hope); did the guy on the tape really do that, or did the algorithm just fill it in?

It's great to be able to get peeks into the development of a compiler toolchain. I'm always wary if I can't dispel magic, where "magic" means guardedly opaque. Corollary: Answers to questions about magic are typically, "you don't want to kn

It would be trivial if the libraries ("frameworks") were the same; their sources are not shared openly by Apple. GNUstep was however based on the same open specification as earlier NeXTStep / OpenStep libraries, which was the same foundatio
