My "source" is 13 years in Japan living with Japanese wife, children & extended family :-) But I'm not going to argue - for example, it may just be that here in Kansai we use them differently. We would definitely say &quo

EDIT: after reading the post above, I'd like to add that there may even be regional differences with all of this, so let me state this is based on my own experience. No, not really IMHO - much more complicated. The first article (I onl

If I may extend my own post for a moment, this is a common problem of trying to translate words & phrases directly. For example, most people know that "Arigato" is Japanese for "Thank you". Except that's really

Perhaps he doesn't understand that "thank you" is usually meant as a simple, polite acknowledgement. A heartfelt expression of gratitude in English is said not with a stock phrase, but by stopping, looking at the person, and

I think it is important to differentiate between "early building" of features you don't yet need, and building in a way that doesn't require much refactoring in order to extend/add those features on. More common tha

As I stated, I was using America as the context, as I thought the parent post was. Our history with drugs and alcohol does not match all places, in all times. More importantly, we are talking about people's _perceptions_ of these event

I question how genuinely accurate that is. Drug use _started_ as illegal, and so many who have experimented and might have continued to casually use instead later on shied away. Alcohol started as a perfectly normal thing (until modern time

you mistake my meaning - it is "more makes way for less". With boats, maneuverability. With "road sharers", survivability.

I don't understand why people would have trouble with that, unless they are arguing from a purely selfish perspective. It is essentially "Marine Law" - the most maneuverable must make way way for lesser. Perfect common sense.
